Hey guys having a problem with my bike putting out power to run all my heated gear, it is a three phase alternator and puts out 435 watts at 7000 rpms like someone is going to be cruising at that rpm, battery checks out, but the techs seemed like me not knowing how to test the system, and buell can not answer my question either, which is how much watts does it put out at 4000 rpm, I am not complaining just want to know, they did put an acc plug that will shut off if the battery gets low, good thinking, but I want to know how much it puts out at 4000 rpm they tested the bike with my gear hooked up and it was still charging at the battery with everything on, and got home riding on the hyway for 90 minutes at 4300 rpm the whole way and got home and battery was weak. Do any of you guys know electrical systems, my sons blast does a better at heating my gear. I have a program to add up all the electrical items up and then see what is left over and takes into account the ecm, injectors, brake lights, etc, things like that, and it says I should have 90 watts left over but just running my jacket and gloves wears down the battery, so I am at a loss to find the answer to my question, how much does it put out at 4000 rpm, if I can get this answer somehow then I would be all set. Buell just intraduced a new ulysses by the way the xb12xt with lower suspension and higher windshield and bags. Mike

Mike - if I heard correctly through the grapevine you had a problem with the charging system and the voltage regulator...that may have crapped out your battery if they didn't replace it...the charging system may be fine but is the battery is junk...it just wont hold the charge. Try having the battery tested at the stealership and then go to AutoZone for the same test as a second opinion.

Thanks I rode up to Maine all hy way with just my jacket and gloves on and they said my battery was 12.8, then I asked if it could be tested with all my gear hooked up and said it was charging but when I go home the battery was low, I think to that a new battery would be good and oddessy batter has one but is a little larger so maybe I can get it to fit. thanks Jpb

Mike... There is a way to test the system, and make sure its within specs, I have it in the manual..

If you want it, lemme know. As far as figuring it with the accessories.. You could do the test, WHILE running said accesssories..

But, you need to figure out what your total draw is, and work against what you can put out....

If the VR is going out, it will start by giving you weak batteries...I went through 2 batteries in one year, before it finally crapped out all the way... bike would run once started... but wouldnt charge, etc..

Got a buddy over to help with the throttle, and everything tested out, EXCEPT the VR...

If you need those pages out of the Service Manual, lemme know...

EDIT: what are you riding? 1125????

That makes it easy then... Fire up the bike, and do whatever voodoo you have to do to get the dash to read out volts.

Start at idle, and note the voltage carefully. Slowly wind up the revs (still in neutral) and see if as RPM speed goes up, the voltage climbs slightly. (.1 or .01 volts).

Whatever RPM you are at when the voltage "stops climbing" with RPM increases is the RPM that you will need to sustain to keep the system charging. Over that, and you are charging. Under that, and the battery is being drawn down.

It will be a really small change, I don't know what the resolution or accuracy of the onboard system is... if the bike can't, a decent digital volt meter should be able to see it.

(note that assumes you have an otherwise working charging system... if your stator, voltage regulator, or even to some degree your battery is toast, then this won't work).

the on bord reading is not the same at the battery, I bought a meter and the readings are different, my bike is going into the shop to go over the bike. Chase is the shop manual out for the 1125? I have somebody to rework the stator and told me to send them the stator and rotor, it is a ktm system and if I have to do that I need the manuel to put it back right. Mike

They are being real anal about getting a service manual.... wouldnt sell one..

Talked with a buddy, couldnt buy the CD... nor borrow it(not that I would copy it)

So.... I WILL get my hands on 1125 Service manual... need to get the XB serivce manual as well...

Chase do the dealers have them, I was told when I was last there there was no way to clear the codes and they did not have the manual yet, I read that there is a way to clear the codes and the bike has to go back and I want them to erase the codes so I can tell if I have a problem or not, I have a voltage trouble code but they say the bike is fine, hopefully get this worked out soon. I dont know if they have one or not... just that they were not at all receptive to selling a SM....

I will call the yahoo's here, and see what I can find...

But, an aquintance that works there, said, I wouldnt be able to work on it... or, some such non sense...

I am sure I will get my hands dirty on one soon...

I agree I will get my hands dirty to on this bike, all ready did 4 oil changes and I maybe will pay for the first time the valves need to be shimed if I can watch, so I can see how they rotate the motor and shim the valves, which I read is easy, but if I can not watch then I will learn myself, I will eventually go to a bigger bore maybe next winter for more low end grunt, I studied all I could before buying the bike and the motor is suppose to be able to make allot more power and heard a rumor there is a race ecm but you need a race license to buy one, I wonder if that is true? the bike uses the same valve shims as the vrods, looks simple to do, it is the electrical system that I am not good with and have had some bad experiences from dealerships screwing up the bike so I do not trust most people unless I know the source is good and I can not do it myself, but have to learn how to do everything on this bike, I am planning on keeping it for a long time so I will save allot in the long run.
