Yeah, slicks describes the feel more than the look! Rode Wed and the ass end didnt want to stay under me whne I stood up straight. Only about 200 miles on them since the sweed and I rode to the coast, but those 200 put a hurting on them! I orderd the Pirelli Diable Conti III. We'll see how the do got the tires for $302 including shipping, just need to get them mounted and balanced, perhaps Roc will hook me up or something. Jim, I'll get you the emulator next saturday or soon ofter if one of us cant make it. I'll ride the Blast next weekend if I must! Got it fired up today, (I'm teaching a couple of people to ride over the next weeks) and beat the hell out of it for a few miles Later! Paul |

Harley is expensive for mount and balance. Take the wheels of yourself and you should be be done in one day and save some money. The last few times I did tire changes I would call the shop ahead of time to see what their schedule was like for tire mounting and be in and out in 2 hours. Let me know if you need any help. We got some riding to do this Saturday... |

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this...
Also, I successfully made a first to second gear shift while riding only on the back wheel yesterday after work. I used to do this all the time on all my other bikes, but my XB has so much torque it's a little bit spooky. |

One of these days we need to do a wheely clinique, so those uf us who dont have the balls to ride on one grow them in the safety of the group. I also want to do a suspension clinique one of these days: Pick a 2 or three mile route with diverse road surface and turns, something round trip that stops the same place it starts. Log the setup we each have when we show up, then baseline the bikes on factory recommendations. Ride the course, make notes on our logs. Burry the front rebound dampening, ride again. Note differences, back the front rebound dampening all the way out, ride the route again.. So on and so on... I can make some "Log sheets" for each of us... Thoughts? I figure we can really learn the suspension on our bikes by trying this, and honestly, TALKING about what we felt after each adjustment... |

After riding to work the past couple days I'm feeling like my bike could run smoother, so I've been looking into the ECMSPY thing again. From what I'm reading on the other forum, you can do some pretty cool stuff with it. Some of the people using it are swapping custom maps via email. Anyway, I was considering the VDST from American Sport Bike, but it's not Vista compatible and I'm not sure if you have as much control with it. Not that I need a ton of control, but it would be nice to be able to reset TPS and A/F and compare stock ecm to the race ecm mapping without having to own both ecm's. Can you do all the mapping with the VDST or is it simply a diagnostic and reset tool? I guess ultimately it doesn't matter since my laptop runs Vista, but I was just curious. |

Its simply a diagnostics tool (I have the VDST). There is a pro version that allows for some more settings but if you want to be able to tune and change maps you would be better off with Direct Link or try the ECMSpy. With Direct Link you would be able to load custom maps or take into the dealer to run on a Dyno and tune to your specific setup. They would then save your map to a CD for future use and tweaking if needed. I felt the same way it could run smoother. Since i commute 60 miles everyday it was really starting to bother me that it took so long to run right every time there was a 30 degree temp change from my previous commute so I bough the Race ECM.I felt the same way it could run smoother. Since i commute 60 miles everyday it was really starting to bother me that it took so long to run right every time there was a 30 degree temp change from my previous commute so I boughth e Race ECM. I have found that the Race ECM is smoother then the stock especially with temperature and elevation changes. I think if I had to do it again I might have done Direct link and custom map by using a Dyno to tune. After I bought the screaming Eagle Race Tuner for my V-Rod I am seeing the potential of being able to have full control of all the values. I am not sure if Direct link is as extensive as the Race Tuner but would be interesting to find out. Rocky at Paradise has played with Direct link and could probably tell you what all it can do. |

Jim, if you didn't have the TPS reset at your 1k service then it's due. Maybe its part of the reason it's feeling a little rough as well. If you have a laptop with a com port I can meetup with you a little bit earlier Saturday and load the VDST and do a TPS and FA reset. It only takes about 5-10 minutes if the bike is warmed up maybe 15 if cold due to the fact the bike has to be at operating temp when adjusting idle back after the reset. |

Aron, Thanks for the offer, but American Sport Bike told me the VDST software isn't Vista compatible, so unless you've figured out how to fix that, I can't use my laptop. That's one of the main reasons I started looking at ECMSPY again. No, the reset hasn't been done, and I'm sure it is overdue, so I would love to get it done. Maybe I can get it to you some time while I'm working on the cable for ECMSPY. I hadn't even thought about the Direct Link option. Do you know if you have to have some kind of "ecm key" to use it? That was another advantage to ECMSPY that I've been reading. No "ecm keys." I'm not even sure what that means. The way I understand it, some of these programs require "keys" to access data in the ecm and they can then only work with one ecm without purchasing more "keys" to tap into more ecm's. Seems a little like a money making gimmick to me. |

Yes Direct link just like my Race tuner I just got uses a hard key or dongle that sits between the two connecting cables. It contains the serial numbers and attaches itself to the serial number of the ECM that it is first connected to. So you will never be able to share it with anyone else or for that matter use it when upgrading bikes unless you take your old ECM with you. If you want the most out of your bike it is really the only way unless you can get the ECMspy to work. Even with the RACE ECM that I have I can tell that there is room for improvement. Even though everyone swear up and down that the race ecm runs richer, I don't see it. At least not with the SS and open airbox I no longer have my laptop so I am in process of figuring out where I can get a real cheap desktop or lap top for the garage since I will need it for two bikes now. |

Well guys, I'm back. Dad is going GREAT! Phillip, thanks for the use of the bags, came in very handy! Work still has me on a crazy schedule but I'll be at the meeting Tuesday night and hope to get some riding in before the weather turns bad. Aron, did you do your forks yet? I haven't had a day off since we moved into the house to do things around the house. Now I need to do my 10K mile service.

Is there already a Tuesday meeting? I thought we just had one two weeks ago? Yes I already did my Fork oil. Once you posted you were out until September I didn't want to wait. Make sure you use a socket for the Fork Caps. If you try to loosen it with a end wrench you will most likely deform the thin wall aluminum. had to buy a new one at $33. The tork spec is only like 23 ft/lbs or so but it took about 100 ft/lbs to break it loose. WTF is up with that? I also used the methods posted by Saintly to compress the spring since I don't own an actual fork spring compression tool. This works pretty well but be warned it does put a small bulge on the tube spacer that compress the spring. I don't think it hurts anything since there is plenty of clearance all the way around it and the fork itself. The tube just act like a giant spacer for the spring and is made from mild steel. I would guess the actual probably would not deform the hole because it catches tube holes from both side. for a more even pull when compressing. however it probably took me 6 hours because I screwed up my left cap. With the right tools I think you can do it in 4 hours your first time and probably 2-3 once you know what your doing and not having to double check everything. I would also buy an extra 8oz of fork oil. I accidentally dropped one of the parts back in in the wrong order and getting back out caused me to dump some of my oil and I had to make another parts run. But then if you can do it perfectly your first time it should be breeze. Oh by the way my oil looked pretty good coming out at 11K miles. I think it all depends on how aggressive of a rider you are. My Vrod only requires Fork oil change every 25k. (Message edited by xbswede on September 02, 2007) |

FYI- My first 1500 miles running on on STD HD 20-50 oil I had no oil consumption. Once I switched to Sync 3, I started to see oil consumption especially when I had been spending a lot of time up in the 4-5 range. Not a lot but enough were I had to add some every 500 miles because it would drop from the middle of the dip stick (where I try to keep it) to just above the low mark. About 400 miles ago I switched to Amsoil 20-50 Synthetic for motorcycles. So far I have not used any and I spent a great deal of time in he 4-5k range yesterday fro about 200 miles. (this is just for the XB12). Not sure what you guys are experiencing once switching off of std oil but though i would share. I don't want to start another oil discussion or BS feedback so that's why I posted it here as a FYI for us locals. The reason I switched is because I have been reading a lot of Vrod threads. And they have had best success with Amsoil when it comes to oil consumption so I thought I would give it try in the Buell as well. Plus you can get it at Joe's and probably most motorcycle stores. Amsoil is also HD approved or at least so it says on the back of the bottle. |

Jim, I just realized that the docking station with my new laptop at work has a IO port. So I went and grabbed it last night so that I could push a new MAP into my Vrod ECM. If you are still interested in a TPS or AFV I could help with it before taking back in on Tuesday. otherwise I should have cheap-o laptop by next weekend and hopefully it will work. |

Jim, I went to Technoresearch's website and they do have Vista compatible version out now. It came out in July. It's a free download. Its the cables that cost money and I have them. Here is a link to the software. I would test it for you but I don't have Win Vista on anything. http://www.technoresearch.com/Downloads/downloads- VDSTS You need the Standard version for the cables I have. The download is 47 MB or so. |
