Lest that message be misconstrued, it was mostly due to the Harley riders, not the bikes themselves. ...it was due to most Harley riders, not the bikes themselves...sounds better (and more appropriate) to me... Tomato, Tomato... Potato, Potato, Potato... Good to hear from you Spike! I still have your parts. When do you want them? How are we going to work out delivery? 1313 |

yeah cause I have been known to run my Harley rather hard.... As for tires, I really want some sort of adventure tire so the Syncs will have to be next. That said Avon's new tire is suppose to wear evenly through the life of the tire. I really would like to try those out too. |

Jim- I haven't ridden one (yet), but that R1200R is supposed to be quite the bike. A buddy of mine (the one leading the ride on Saturday) has an R1150R. The 1150R is more than happy to chase sportbikes down twisty roads, yet it has nice ergonomics, removable hard bags, heated grips, and the rest of the BMW amenities. The new 1200R is some ~50lbs lighter, ~20hp more powerful, and significantly less ugly. The only real strike I have against it is the sound, it's uninspiring to say the least. Still, it's near the top of my might-own-when(if)-I-get-too-old-for-sportbikes list. |

Anybody have any experience rebuilding the inverted forks? I have done a ton of conventional forks, but the rebuild of the WP forks I have is startign to scare me alittle. And I am alitle afraid to take ti to a dealer/shop as the $ side scares me. |

But seriously, my bike has inverted forks and I've got the service manual. It's not the same inverted forks, but if you want to read through the procedure ... I just had an idea. I met someone who sent me a lot of pictures of S1 mods they had done. I'll PM him and see if he has ever done the forks. (Message edited by jlnance on March 02, 2007) |

Info I got:
quote:Not sure why he wants to rebuild. I did mine, well one 3 times, dammit, because of something I up when I took them apart to polish & drill the caliper brackets. It was the fact that I did not use a new copper washer/seal at the bottom. It leaked. So the second time I took that one apart, I thought I would just go ahead & change the seal. I buggered up the seal & had to do it again. Don't know which forks he has. Mine are the earlier WP's. Newer ones are different, so--? If he really wants to pull these apart, be aware that that little allen head recessed up in the bottom of the ford has locktite on it & you need to heat things up to get it out. Very small, 5-6mm allen head, easy to strip the head if you don't heat them up first. Don't have to do this just to change oil, unless changing the seal too. There was also a problem with a part number for these WP forks that was not correct in the factory parts book. (upper DU bushing) Got that solved with some help from a couple guys @ Sacborg. If it comes to that I can look that info up, but--'Don't know which forks he has'. I need to do the other fork for new oil. Other than that & getting the seal back in (used some homemade pcv pipe driver, not a big problem) it is not a bad job & the factory manual is very good. Best I have seen.

Anybody have any experience rebuilding the inverted forks? Yes, tear down of tuber forks with Xb addendum in the KV, If you can change a tire you can rebuild them, the only sticking points. 1. you need a seal driver to install the seals 2. XB forks you need a spring compressor you will want a jack or some blocking to hold up the sled.} http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=3842&post=802080#POST802080 PS dont mess around with the pipe for the seal driver, the shop time will pay for the driver ( I will buy one for next year most likely ) and Its a waste of time. if you miss you could spend enough to do several changes, (Message edited by oldog on March 02, 2007) |

yeah gotta rebuild the one cause it is leaking, they are WP forks form a late 90s model, just got to check what size the tube is for a seal driver. |

Jim N...what was up with your front brake? I'll guess at the steering head bearing. My bike is doing the same thing. Lot's of minor things I have to do to the bike in the next few weeks. Driving down to Cullowhee early tomorrow for hopefully the last time during school year. Can anyone tell me if a HD dealer will inspect my bike while I wait? I want to get a free cap. If not, I'll get it done at this little shop in Greensboro that did my last tire change for cheap . I'm pretty sure one of the workers/owners does some drag racing for Ray Price. I know, just in case, I should be legal in every way, from what I've been reading here lately. I'm workin on it, and it will be done in time for the Badness. Better safe than sorry...later!!! |

Twig - The brake was pulsing. They replaced the rotor, which was at the limit of the runout spec. It's great now. I'm not sure exactly where Cullowhee is, but I know it's in the mountains. I hear the dealer near Deals Gap is very good. I don't remember their name. |

My front brake was pulsing as well. So I took it in, they replaced the front rotor as well, now it's smooth as silk. Iteresting. |

Nutsnbolt - It's a know problem, caused by brake pad deposits building up on the rotor. Switch to the Lyndal gold pads and the problem will not return. |

I decided to change the tires this morning. It's always interesting when I start working on the bike to see how long it takes before I either: 1 - Make a trip to Advance Auto 2 - Call Mark. This looked to be a simple job, so I didn't think either would be necessary. Ten minutes later I was on my way to Advance to buy a 3/8 allen socket to remove the pinch bolt from the rear axle. After I removed the pinch bolt, I put the hex piece from the toolkit into the axle, put a big wrench on it and pressed. Nothing happened. I got a rubber mallet and beat on the wrench. Nothing. I grabbed the bike by the luggage rack and pushed down with my foot on the wrench. Now something happened; the jack started to slide around. I lowered the jack and stood back on the wrench. Still nothing. I thought it might work better with a socket wrench, so I went back to advance because I didn't have a 7/8 socket. I repeated the standing on the wrench procedure with the socket wrench, and it still didn't come loose. I called Mark. Half an hour later I was back at the house with Mark's breaker bar. 17 inch handle It wasn't even hard, the axle just popped loose when I stood on it.
That axle is a work of art. No spacers, everything is machined in. |

Maybe there is something to this annoying loctite stuff. I was just cleaning up around the bike and I notice a screw missing from the muffler I put on a couple weeks ago. Went to the other side of the bike an another screw is gone and a 3rd was loose. I didn't really believe they could vibrate out of the holes. Went by RP to pick up a few screws but they were closed. Monday's project. |

Jim you could have had some of my loctite today. I have been trying to get the front upper fender thingie off today and the screw has so much loctite on it that the nut plate is spinning in the plastic. Tired hitting the T27 bit with a hammer to break it loose and tried heat with a solder iron to no avail. Looking like I will be in the market for a new headlight assembly. I would much prefer to replace the screws when they fall out. I'm sure this is going to be an expensive part. Will see Monday also. |

Sorry for the double post but if anyone is thinking about the MT60's....my mileage experience has been horrible! At 1157 miles there is only 2 1/2 .32 of tread remaining on the rear. Hoping to make it past inspection on Tuesday. Didn't realize they were wearing so quickly. Ordered some Avon Strom AV55/56 today, hope they wear like iron. Wife wasn't happy when I told her I needed new tires.....again. |
