Carlos...... Got gas?

I talked to Mike. He said he had a GREAT time. This was one of the few times I have heard Mike really go on and on about what a great time he had riding. He said he felt bad riding you out of gas, though.

Overall, said he had a really great time.

So, Jacksonville area riding isn't really in J-Ville, is it. Plus, it's relatively close to some really great roads. I am gonna call Mike later and find out Exactly which areas you hit, but, I hope to see more of you and some others out there once in a while.

Take care.

Answer: 36.8 miles.

Question: What is the distance a Ulysses will go on reserve, Alex.

Ding, Ding, Ding!

It was a good ride. Mike and I have very similar riding styles. I like to kill the curves but 90mph is about max on the street for me and at that usually just a couple seconds and I lift. Mike said just about the same thing, so I know he and I would make good riding partners.

He should not feel bad about me running out of gas. I knew about how much range I had left in the tank and I was trying to get to Richlands because I left the house without my wallet and that is where Webe was going to meet me with it. I did not realize that I had left my wallet until we got to the fish camp. I called Webe and he went to the house to pick it up for me before riding south to meet up with us. I had 150 miles on the tank when I realized my dilemma and I should have gone straight to our meeting point, but Mike said he was heading that way and to ride with them. I told him I had 30-40 miles left on the tank and that I had to meet with Webe in Richlands in 30-45 minutes.

After Mike did a u-turn on one road I knew I was in trouble. We kept venturing away from civilization and even though the ride was fun, I kept one eye on the Reserve mileage counter. At 30 miles I called uncle and Mike said can you make it another 3 miles, I said yes, and I could, but the gas station was more like 7.5 miles and I could not make that. As we came into Beaulleville, the bike coughed. Running about 75mph, I pulled the clutch, the bike stumbled at idle for a second and stalled. I coasted as long as I could but fell about 1/2 mile short of the gas station. Mike ran and got me a gallon of gas which was enough to get me to Richlands where Webe was waiting. Tell Mike the next time we ride on Sunday, I owe him breakfast.

After Webe and I met up, we went to Mike's farm for lunch and then rode back roads to Goldsboro to pick up his derby cover at Shelton's. To our shock while there I decided to order parts for the M2, knowing they would not have them in stock. To my shock they were three for three, solenoid, Oil Line and Enrichener Cable. They had them in stock! (Okay they are all just Harley parts used on Sportsers - one advantage to tubers). Then Webe decided to give it a try, he said do you have the Sto-n-Go tail bag for Ulys, and they continued their perfect record, they had two. They even put up the Buell sign. on the side of the Building.

All in all a great ride. I think Webe had fun riding with another Buell and hitting the curves with his new Uly. We also started trading wheelies at stop signs. I had all three bags on the bike because it was 36°F when I left the house this morning and I knew it was going to warm up, so I needed room to strip off layers as the temperatures warmed up. He laughed at the Bagger pulling the front wheel. It was a good time. I hope next time we can get more ers there because Mike did have a great circle of roads around Jacksonville, some I knew about, some I didn't.

SPARK PLUGS???

CAN I BELIEVE WHAT?!?!

You know yesterday I had a doctor's appointment that had to be rescheduled due to the doctor that left me off with day light on a beeeuuutiful day, so of course I had to ride. So out of Grifton I decide to explore to see if there any great roads I have not explored yet. I thought to myself, "not likely!" But to my surprise they paved a dirt road I have taken a couple of times on the Uly and man, is it a sweet road now!! Short but sweet the road is about two miles long, but in that short distance you hit three 20mph curves right back to back and then several more 35mph turns that run through some woods. Love it when I find a good road near the house!!

Sweet! Somebody took the bait...

Let's see who all sticks with it and reads this until the end...

A little background info. My S2 came with 6R12A plugs from the factory. I converted the motor to Thunderstorm specs in the winter of 1998. Somewhere around 2000, 2001 or 2002 Buell changed the recommended spark plugs to 10R12A (the same plugs as in the V-Rod). This was mainly due to warranty claims in Europe for burning holes in pistons. The 6R12A is a hotter temp plug than the 10R12A.

Alright, picture the beautiful weekend we had this past weekend. My plan was to meet up with a couple of guys from work and put some more break in miles on the S2. As usual (for a weekend) I was late in getting motivated. As I was getting ready to go I had one of my 'if this bad thing were to happen, this would be the most appropriate time for it to happen' premonitions. This one was, today would be a perfect day for the S2 NOT to start. I ignore my premonition and move both bikes out of the garage to put the V-Rod in the 'off duty' spot and put the saddlebags on the S2. Shortly after I put the tankbag on my premonition comes true. It wants to start but maybe fires once and then just doesn't want to stay running. Well, conveniently I have a harness for the battery tender to connect to in order to keep the battery charged. As a note, the battery wasn't fully charged when I unplugged the battery tender. Since the terminals on the battery are buried under the bodywork I thought it would be a cool place to check the voltage of the battery. I finally found my multimeter and stuck the leads into the terminals on the end of the harness and couldn't get a stable measurement. About this time the guys I was to go riding with called me and asked where the heck I was and why I wasn't at our appointed meeting point. I explained the situation and was greeted with 'Well the V-Rod still starts, right? Well then, get your arse down here!'. Since we were going to stop at a couple of bike shops (Carlos, I think I saw your old Honda at CMSK...) they said that I should be able to pick up a battery.

When I got home that night I put the new battery on the tender to charge it fully before I installed it. As I was waiting for a friend to come over later that night I decided to take the tank cover and fuel tank off to start gaining access to the old battery. After I gained access to the battery I noticed that one lead of the harness was no longer connected to the ring terminal that was still in place on the positive post of the battery. Well no wonder I couldn't get a stable voltage reading... Now I had plenty of access to the terminals so I dug out the multimeter again to find 12 + volts at the battery (even after all the cranking in the morning to try and get it started. So, actually I didn't need a battery. The problem was elsewhere.

Sunday afternoon (it was a REAL LATE night Saturday night, or was it early morning Sunday) I decided to pull the battery out of the S2 to charge it fully and try some electrical checks. The adapter cable I made to adapt the S1 ignition module to the S2 wiring harness checked for continuity for all the wires (a previous incarnation of an adapter cable was the first thing to strand me - owner induced, D'OH!), the coil resistance readings were right in spec (not bad for an 11 & 1/2 year old coil with 107,000 miles...), so I was thinking I might have to breakdown and check out the individual wires in the wiring harness checking for broken wires. Cooler heads prevailed when I realized I had to start packing activities for going home for Christmas. Before I began packing I decided to check out the plugs. They were covered in gas, and appeared to have some oil burnt on them from the first firing when I put it back together. So I cleaned the plugs off and checked them both for spark. I wasn't too impressed with the spark, but they were throwing a spark. I put it back together and it still wouldn't start. I called it a day scratching my head wondering what it could be.

Monday at work I talked with a colleague about the problem. I don't normally talk to EE's, as you know - you can't spell GEEK without EE, but I HATE electrical stuff. I bribed him with a beer to stop over and check it out. After showing him what it was doing (or rather more correctly NOT doing) he decides to check out the plugs. He had a slightly different method for checking the plugs. The plugs I put in when I put it back together were BRAND NEW 10R12A's. I put them in as I had been a 'bad boy' and was still using the 6R12A's. Sure they produce a little pinging in extended use in the hot summers around here, but my last inspection of the old pistons (getting ready for Daytona) showed that the pistons, with over 68,000 miles as a Thunderstorm Engine with 6R12A's, looked damn near brand new after I removed the built up carbon from them. No melting rear piston here! It made me wonder why the 10R12A's were the plug of choice for Thunderstorm engines?

Well, the 10R12A's with just over 100 miles on them wouldn't pass a spark across the electrodes with my colleagues method of checking for spark. He asked if I still had the plugs I took out The Harley Davidson Gold 6R12A's (with probably over 20,000 miles on them) were quickly rounded up and checked to see if they would pass a spark. Indeed! Let there be light!

I put the old H-D Gold 6R12A's back in place, temporarily connected the fuel line after I set the fuel tank in place. After a couple twists of the grip to get some fuel down the fuel line and into the carb, I hit the thumbstart and it immediately came back to life!

Shortly after the engine had gotten pretty warmed up the fuel line decided to pull off the petcock (fuel valve for those who are offended by petcock...) and the scene was very similar to the scene below:

JUST KIDDING!!! Actually trying to see if you are still reading this...

The S2 is fine and now runs again, but unfortunately I won't have any time to ride it before I leave for Wisconsin Friday right after lunch.

The funny thing is I washed it before Kristy saw me riding in 'downtown' New Bern that one Sunday. It started a couple of time after that but then it has sat. Since my short 4 mile commute doesn't fully warm the engine in the colder temps, good break in miles are not usually an option. So is there a connection to washing your bike and it not starting shortly thereafter? Naw, I doubt it! It just sounds so much like Carlos's M2. Carlos - Did you recently change the plugs to 10R12A's? Originally your bike had 6R12A's in it... I doubt your M2 has the same malady. Just funny in a weird way... Specially since you bought a solenoid at Shelton's. Funny, I didn't notice the Buell sign on the dealeship. What side is it on? The side the service entrance is on or the side by the Dodge dealership?

So that's today's lecture on spark plugs. Join me tomorrow for Tire Valve Stems and ask yourself 'Is this guy full of hot air?!?!'!

That was a long one, wasn't it?

1313 - I still have not gotten the M2 running and doubt I will work on it until after the holidays. I did get some of the parts I needed but I forgot the spark plug wires and they are bad. So before I get those and I will check the spark plugs. The ones in the bike now are the ones that we put in over at Dave's early last year. They looked fine but I will check it out. Glad to hear that the S2 is back out on the road. After the holidays we will have to ride to break it in.

There is an XB9 Race Kit at New River Harley. I picked up one for my 05 today. The only one that's left is a kit for an 03-04 XB9. I guess they found em under a dust pile recently. So, I came in there for oil, and left with a race kit.

Good day for me.

Gonna go there and get the TPS reset tomorrow I hope. Will have new rubber on Monday. (Carlos, the tire I bought was my Christmas Present that I'm addressing from my Wife. She doesn't know this yet, but come Monday morning she will.) That's why I couldn't exchange for yours. It will be better and funnier this way.

Anyway, someone call them and buy this.

Carlos, I look forward to seeing you down here come Jan. I'm gonna email Mike tonight and get with him on the Edenton thing. He's all game for it.

Later, skaters

Hey Jim,

Since our schedules didn't seem to be matching up (probably mainly due to the fact that I work strange hours) and I'm leaving town tomorrow, I dropped off the charger and wrench I borrowed in your mailbox. I'm glad no cop was driving by at 1230 as it may have been hard to explain why I was sticking stuff in your mailbox at the middle of the night. Anyways, just wanted to let you know.

Thanks again for the supplies

Hey Nance...I remember you asking me how my youngest son Jay was enjoying the college life at WCU. Probably not much partying. He brought home four A's and one B. Hopefully he will repeat next semester and be accepted at UNCG, which will save us several $. Honestly, I did not think he would do that well. Pat was surprised as well.Shows how much we know!
