Is it only Carlos and Mike and Son going to the coast?
I ran into the exact same problem after the "burnout" incident when replacing the front fender.\black
Does trying to Bulldoze a Neon not kinda bind those bolts up a little? |

Dave - Thanks for the info. I don't feel so bad for not being able to make the extractor work.
After trying to tighten the lower bolt, I realize there is no way that upper bolt is coming out in one piece. If I had it to do over again, I might have sacrificed the dinky plastic fender, filed 2 flats on the bolt, and attempted to back it out with an adjustable wrench. As it is, I'm sure that would wring the head off now that I've drilled out the center of the bolt. And I'd really like to have the head on when I drill it out, as it makes a nice guide.
My current plan is to just leave it on there. My only reason for wanting to get it out, besides not liking the idea of having stripped bolts on my bike, was that it allows the fender to vibrate. I'm thinking a drop of silicone behind the fender will stop that, and will be easily removable in the future.
I still don't see why Buell felt the need to locktight it on there so well. The bolts in the back of the fender go into little metal clips. |

Hey Jim, what if you drilled the heads off, pulled the fender off, and then used a good set of vice-grips?
Mike/Carlos-I'll probably head down at sun up, or a little before. I need to get the hell outta here for a while, if only for an afternoon of riding! |

U4 - It might work, I don't have much experience with this, so I don't know.
My thought is that if it's so hard to turn the bolt that the torx heads were stripped out, then my chances of getting a headless bolt out with vice grips are about 0. |

If you damage the goods during removal I may have some Uly front fender parts. I'm getting rid of the stock 'stuff' for a more typical XB look -- I've got all the parts (all two of them) to go out to the barn and do it.

Jim, leaving it that way could eventually damage the fender to the point it could become a safety hazard. Also, it's easier to change the front tire with the fender off, less likely to damage(scratch) the wheel with it off. Go ahead and fix it. Just drill till the head pops off. Then you can remove the fender and there'll be a nice shoulder sticking out to grab a hold of. The problem isn't the loctite to begin with, it's the odd torx size of 27 that seems to get most in trouble. Almost all torx bit sets come in size increments of 5 (i.e.-10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) and a 25 is close enough to "get the job done" in most cases. But if you're not careful, or the screw's just a little stubborn, then it's easy to round out the head.
I ran into this very problem with the 883 earlier this week. Pauletta was trying to get the derby cover off of the primary to put in some fresh Sport-Trans fluid and I handed her a T-25. Second bolt, a little stubborn, sure enough, rounded. We both were scrambling to find the T-27 after trying to come up with other solutions. Tried the Buell's torx wrench, couldn't get enough bite with it, various allens, none I felt comfortable with, finally, 'Letta finds the T-27 and there was enough left of the screw that I was able to get it out.
Moral: As has been discussed on other threads, the quality of service at many of these dealers is getting pretty scary, do as much as you can yourself and avoid the hassle. The dealer should have made that right, that was their mistake, not yours. |

Be sure to take a tool, i would think that a 6 inch socket extension would work), and place it on the tip of the bolt, tap it a few times with a hammer. Don't wack it, but still yet don't baby it. Often enough this will loosen that loctite up enough to get'em out. You got nothing to lose. Take the fender off, a vibrating plastic fender against a bolt is pretty much like taking a round file to the inside of those mounting holes. Like Dave said, THEY should fix it, but I degress! |

It actually wasn't a dealer that rounded the bolt for me. This was an indie shop I used when I had a blowout in Asheville. |

My daughter the LEO,,she seems to be digging it just fine. My police Hallmark moment was when she needed me to wash the bugs off of the rooftop light bar (the one that's always flashing on me for riding north of the speedlimit) because she's to short to reach it. If she's happy then I'm happy,,well,,,other than those holes in the drywall where I keep busting my head,,,

I'm keep telling Carlos that I want a 4' x 4' x 8" section of padded wall to bang my head into! Only those that you love to drive you to that point, but what would we do without them.

Jim, I haven't done anything, yet, but gather the parts. I'm going to de-beak and replace stock Uly fender with a regular XB piece. Actually, Al Lighton's working on a marginally larger front fender that I'll eventually put on the Uly.

OMG
I went by Marks house. I wasn't going to work on the bolt because I'm taking the bike to Roanoke tomorrow. We worked on the bolt.
Dave, you were so right. Mark took the other 3 torx bolts out with a T27 socket, and they came right out w/o fuss. I bet the last one was stripped by a T25. Trying 3 different stores today, none of which had a T27, and all of which had T25s, I can see how it could happen.
We drilled the head off, but the bolt has a built in spacer, so it came off flush with the fork. No problem, Mark drills all the way through the bolt, and we use an ez-out to try to back the bolt out. Ez-out breaks off. But some of it is sticking out!  But we break it off.  But Mark manages to get it out by threading a bolt into the back of the fork! Then we try drilling it out with a 1/4 inch bit. Which breaks off in the hole. 
It's still in the hole, but that hole is attached to the fork with a tie wrap, so I can go on my trip tomorrow. And Mark sent me home with a T27 driver in case it gives me any problems tomorrow.
Despite the problems, it's a pleasure to watch Mark work. Every time there was a set back, each of which would have sent me into dispair, he had a new idea of how to proceed. Even the broken drill bit did not defeat him. We just need to take the wheel off so we can puch it out the back. But thats for another day. |

I mean how does a drill bit snap?
I knew I should not go the easy out method but I figured
"What can happen the other 3 bolts came out super easy"
plus when I really thought about it it was easy to get out the busted piece.
then it was
"Well I will just drill it out and re-tap it"
then the drill bit broke and it was 99% through the hole, and it was a 3/16ths bit.
Should be easy enough to use a small punch and pop it out from the back
Jim's bikes and me just do not get along, hell I took 2 exhausts on and off my sporty this week, built a shift linkage from stainless rod for it, as well as built an exhaust bracket... But Jim's bikes, no they have to do bad things.
that and who uses what appeared to be red locktite on fender bolts? ot only was it on the bolt it was on the lower part of the fork....like it was gooped on.
