Glenn, I am planning on doing the Smoke Out again. Only problems, so far, are that: a. I don't have that Friday off as vacation (I still have time, but don't know if I will burn the vacation day or not). b. I was dragging my feet too long and missed out on the camping (reservations for camping at a Biker event - sounds like RUBbish to me...), and I don't want to spend the $$$ for lodging in Salisbury. Sounds like it is time to get resourceful, kinda like the owner of this V-Rod I saw in Wichita did...

The Boy slew the dragon! He's due back here around 11 pm. He left at 5:30 this morning. He sounded much more excited than he did tired. I'm exhausted just thinking about spending that much time in the saddle. |

Aren't Uly's grand? Yes. The thing is, I think that if I hadn't done the Dragon, I could have done a 1000 mile day. The last 100 miles were kind of rough yesterday, but the other 650 were fun. |

I took off yesterday knowing I was going riding. The Dragon was a possibility, as was Boone. I didn't want to make plans and then do something I didn't enjoy, so I just headed twords Asheville, resolved to do what felt good when I got there. I got into Asheville at about 11, and what felt good were lunch and thoughts of the Dragon. Since I didn't have definite Dragon plans when I left, I had only glanced at the googled directions. I thought I remembered it saying take exit 18 off of 40, so I rode west tword exit 18. There is no exit 18. I pulled out the map and charted a new route. I ended up driving down through Waynesville, Maggie Valley, and Cherokee on highway 19. Some of it was pretty, but there was a lot of traffic, and 19 runs through the center of all those towns. I eventually make it down to Bryson City, and stop at a little place next to the river for gas and snacks. It was nice to get off the bike and sit by the river for a while. A small tenget. Last week I read a post about late apexing turns. So I took the Blast out a couple of times, ran down tword Lillington, and practiced late apexing every turn. I don't really know if I'm doing it correctly, but I have gotten a lot of practice turning, and particularly throwing the bike over hard. I left Bryson City and saw a sign for Fontana (hw 28), which I followed. This turned out to be a lucky mistake. If I had looked at the map, I would have continued on to find hw 129, and followed it up to The Dragon. 28 intersects 129 right below the Tennesse line. It runs through Fontanna Village and along side the TVA lake. It was an absolutly beautiful ride, and the road was curvy as well. I kept having to decide if I wanted to look at the lake or play with the curves. It was a great delimma. It quickly becomes apparent to me that a couple days of corner practice on the Blast has done wonders for me. I am fast, at least on 28. I hope it carries over to 129. Highway 28 intersects 129 at the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort, where the picture above was taken. There were a bunch of bikes in the parking lot. I pull up and walk around a bit to strech my legs, and look for Buells while I'm there. There were probably close to 100 Bikes in the parking lot, and I was the only Buell. I don't like being that unique, I'd have liked to found some others. A few minutes later I took off up 129 into TN. There was a guy on a sportster going 30 mph and a pickup truck right behind him. Then a few bikes behind the truck. I was one of them. That wasn't very fun, so I pulled off to let them get ahead of me, and took off again. I come around a corner and my left boot scrapes. Killboy is right there to get it all to. My toes point down when I am riding so I don't really have a feel for how far leaned over I had it. I catch back up to the sportster in a minute, and ride the rest of the way behind him. By the time we get to the overlook, there is a pack of motorcycles backed up. Most of us pull off at the overlook, and I ask some guys if there is more to see if I keep going. They tell me that the road goes down to the lake, but most of the curvy stuff is done. I ride down to the lake, turn around, and come back over the overlook. I wave and keep going. There is no traffic in front of me now, so I can run it at my own pace. I'm supprised by how well I'm doing. At some point I'm comming down an incline and relize that the turn at the bottom is very tight. I remind myself that the bike is more capable than the rider. I know this is true because I read it on BadWeb. I've no doubt the bike can make it around the corner if I don't freak out. I heel it way over and the sole of my right foot is pushed up by the pavement. This isn't like before where my left foot was scraping along. There is actually significant force under my toes now. The bike does fine and the rider is thrilled. I come around the corner, and Killboy is at the top of the hill. I don't know if they got that or were shooting the following turn. Guess I'll see. I made it back to the resort in 1 piece. I filled up the bike and someone comes over and asks me about the tires I've got on the bike. Turns out he owns a Uly and a Dresser. He has the Dresser up there today, and uses the Uly for gravel roads. I look the bikes over again and see an white XB9R. I find the rider who makes me feel old by addressing me as sir. Turns out he is from Rocky Mount. He waved at me on the Dragon, but I was looking at the road. He had just been down. Tore up his jeans and a little spot on his hand. The bike lost half a brake lever, a peg, and had a few scratches. There is a dent in the frame from a previous incident involving wheelies. We talked a while and he came and looked at the Uly. He said he was thinking about selling the Firebolt and getting a crusier because the firebolt made it too fun to do crazy stuff. Then he decides he wants to go ride again. And I decide I've had enough and it's time for me to go. I start the bike up and someone comes up to talk, so I cut it back off. It's a Riders Edge instructor from HD of Atlanta. He's ridden a Uly and likes them. Wants to know if I see many on the road. He is up there with his son, celebrating HS graduation. I head off back down hw 28, and my friend on the Buell heads down 129. I take 74 back to Asheville, which is SO much faster than comming down 19. I call mom and she isn't home. I've already decided that I want to ride back to Raleigh, so this just makes it an easier decision. It's already 7:00, and I decide to ride till dark before stopping for dinner. I make it to Statesville with 178 miles on that tank of gas, the last 13 miles on reserve. Dinner at Cracker Barrel, and then back to Raleigh in the dark. The last 100 miles was kind of tough, but the first 650 was great. I like this. |

Nice post Jim. Be careful about the toes down riding position. Not only does it really cut down on your lean angle but it can be dangerous. Years ago I had the toe of my boot caught and my foot bent backwards under the foot peg while riding like that. It hurt like a SOB. Since then I usually ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs. From time to time I will hook my heels over the pegs and point my toes down to get a change in position and to stretch the ankles. See ya soon I hope. |

Jim, quite a journey of discovery you've had. When you bought that Blast! did you think it would lead you to where you are today? It's part of what makes the Buell community so special. Your descriptive writing style is fun to read too. Now that you've discovered the hardcore drug of lean angle, you've got to get the toes up. Like Mike said, ride with balls of your feet on the pegs. You'll also discover that this position adds yet another "tool" to your 'control arsenal'. You Uly guys though, I'm waiting to read here soon that one of you was hungry, so you rode to Cali for some 'Jack-In-The-Box', or took an afternoon ride to Key West for a Margarita at Trader Rick's. Tuesday I got in a quick 300 miles on the Lightning. Rode down to Madison, through Vevay, snaked my way over to Aurora, then on to Batesville, Metamora, Connersville, Rushville, then back home. Most of it was scenic, some of it was twisted, and it's always good to see the Ohio River. In. 7 going down into Madison was a good if short little corkscrew. In.56 running east out of Vevay was a hoot, Switchback=good slow F-150=bad. In.229 south of Batesville is nearly as entertaining as it is north to Metamora. |

From time to time I will hook my heels over the pegs and point my toes down to get a change in position and to stretch the ankles. I was playing with that comming home last night. I hooked them over the passenger pegs too. See ya soon I hope. You're pump came in yesterday. :-) |

so you rode to Cali for some 'Jack-In-The-Box' I've got the corprate travel policy on my desk. I was trying to figure out how to get them to let me (and pay for) taking the Uly for the San Francisco trip I did last week. It didn't work out though. Not only would I have to fudge the rules, but if I'm going to ride across the US, I don't want to do it over a weekend. I want some free time. And the really big kicker is that while I would love the trip out, the trip back would suck. |
