Here's to "bulletproof" Hondas . . . Last week we picked up an '01 XR100R for the wife to ride. It's in relatively nice shape, fairly clean, garage kept . . . should make a fun toy. I've been using my spare time this week to take care of some basic maintenance projects on the bike, this morning's project was to pull the front wheel and check the brakes. I got the front end in the air, removed nut from axle, wiggle/push axle to slide it out . . . axle won't move. No problem, just tap it a few times with the hammer . . . hmm, still won't move. No problem. put nut back on axle to protect threads, hit harder with hammer . . . still won't move, this could take longer than expected. Coat exposed areas of axle with PB Blaster, check for anything that would prevent axle from coming out, hit again with hammer, knock bike off of jackstand . . . still stuck. It appears I won't be able to get enough leverage with the front end hanging in the air. Disconnect brake cable, loosen pinch bolts on triple clamp, remove fork/wheel assembly, strip down to just wheel and left fork, brace fork against floor, coat axle again with PB blaster, hit harder with hammer . . . nothing, still won't move. Get bigger hammer, close garage door to minimize noise, wail away on axle . . . axle finally begins to move. flip wheel over to see how far the axle is hanging out . . . axle isn't hanging out, guts of drum brake are being pushed out of the wheel. Think for a minute, decide removing brake guts would be progress, flip wheel back over, go back to wailing on axle till brake assembly comes completely out of the wheel. Now the wheel is free and I have the left fork leg with the drum brake still attached, held in place by the left wheel bearing that is seized to the axle. At this point I'm somewhat frustrated. I'm already using my biggest hammer (excuse to buy bigger one?), the part is dripping with PB blaster, and attempts to grab the bearing with vice grips have been fruitless. The only option left is to add heat, but I don't have a propane torch. However, I do have a bic lighter. Heat axle with lighter till smoke appears, brace fork against floor, wail away with big hammer . . . bearing finally lets go of the axle. I don't know the book time for removing the front wheel from an XR100, but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to take 1.5 hours. The next time someone tells me Hondas don't break I might kick them in the nuts. |

Spike, I missed the part where you grab a cold beer, sit back and drink it while the pb goes to work. Man, that sounded like a PIA ! Reminds me of the time I replaced ALL the bushings in a 95 Miata's suspension. I know you can relate to that. Whew. (Message edited by rubberdown on March 30, 2006) |

Carlos, Kristi, Jim, Rebecca, Brankin, Larry, had a great time as usual, you're all great friends. I'm a bit tired and this isn't making a whole lot of sense to me right now, so I'll leave it at that for right now...... Dave |

yesterday afternoon about 5. I decided to go for a ride and see if I could find your place. I learned a lot about apex. Number one is that its no fun to ride there during rush hour. I did find a nice road south of your place. It's called Tingen Rd. Ever ridden it? |

Everyone, got a chance to ride today. I swung by Old Maple Hill, IT'S OPEN. I swung by NRHD and met a couple of Buellers. One was down from Ohio, rides a Blast. The other one is from Wilmington, he was trading his CityX in for a ULY. They know about BadWeb. Told them to check out our section. Hope they drop in. |
