X1Bueller.....the formula is sq.ft. X 40 = btu's needed (output). A bit of advice, if you want to heat your garage year after year, don't waste your money on bullshit little heaters. Put in a ceiling hung unit heater. It will be cheaper in the long run. Have a Happy Holiday. Al

Blasted...

Can you give the formula for cooling as well? I forgot it as I have not sold residential HVAC for about 25 years. I know the formulas are a short cut and can be effected by excessive glass areas, inadequate insulation and poor construction, but they sure are close.

Incidentally, your suggestion of a horizontal furnace mounted above is the safest and most efficient for a garage installation as flammable fumes are heavier than air. Out west, we had our furnaces and water heaters in the garage with open pilots. They had to be raised up on a 30" platform and the codes also called for a ground level vent to the outside for the flammable fumes to escape.

Thanks,

Bill

Nevco, the formula I usually use is 400-600 sq.ft. per ton. There may be some better formula, but this works pretty good.

That's the thing. I may only be here another couple of years. But if I get a hanging unit, Is it that difficult to take down and move with me?

X1Bueller...

Neither difficult to install or remove assuming you have a typical open attic garage. Suggest you check them out online with the various furnace manufacturers concerning dimensions and weight. You may or may not need to double up the joists, but other than that the R&R is simple.

All

I’ve got a Lyons Industrial Shelving Unit . . . . . . . 42” high, 23.75” deep, 37.75” wide . . . .four adjustable shelves . . . . . this thing is a tank! It’s held a minimum of 800 pounds at one time (spread among the fours shelves) . . . .. I’ve no use for it at all . . . . . any takers?

(posted here in the local club threads as it wouldn’t likely be worth the shipping costs to those from further away)

Bomber,

May be interested in shelves. Can you estimate approximate weight (as in light, medium or REAL heavy). Could one person easily lift assembled unit in/out of van?

Is this thing all greasy (you old gearhead) :-)

Thanks everyone for coming to the annual Christmas party. I (Andi) enjoyed talking with all of your wives and they should come out for at least one meeting. Right Nancy? See you all at the next meeting. Are we going to Deal's Gap? Count us in! Brad and Andi
