As a Virginia rider, I am always interested in new routes explored, destinations found and hideaways exposed in the Old Dominion. All comments and ideas welcome... This extends to all neighboring states.. thanks. |

Come North... I'll show ya a bunch of fun roads.. Or.. Take 58 West, for about 7 hours. As you exit Mount Rodgers State Park, Turn right on to 91, In Damascus turn left on 716 and go until you hit Shady Valley Country Store. Turn left at the store onto 421 (The Striped Snake)... Follow 421 out of Mountain City, turn left onto rt. 67 (it turns into rt.88 once it crosses the state line.). In Warrensville, turn left onto 194 from there you can just go North back to 58. Hey, it's a loop. Go back to shady valley and turn the other way on 421.. go into Bristol get some shut eye and go riding again.. These are just a few of the roads, usually quite well paved and very twisted in sections. I know it's a ways away... But trust me.. the roads are worth it.. |

Ok, cool loop to run up that way (you probably know it already).. Take 69 up to Staunton. Then run 250 West into WV. Now this is some really great roads.. Follow it all the way to 219, go North into Elkins. From there, run 33 East.. (you're gonna love this) all the way to.. Elkton! Now, if your already in Elkton, take 33 West to 42 South out of Harrisonburg. Then 250 West.. I love this full loop and have used it several times. OK.. One more.. I've never made this as a single run, but the roads used to be pretty nice.. (it's been a while since I've been on some of them).. Take 17 North out of Hampton. Then 33 East to 3 North. Follow 205 through Colonial Beach and then hang a right on 618 then follow it onto 218 and run that all the way into Fredricksburg. Now, you're getting closer to my neck of the woods.. Ok, I'm done for now.. I promise. |

The Roanoke contingent has several trusty routes. Though I have not ventured terribly too far from home. But this spring I'm hoping to put MUCHO miles on the Lightning. NUTS |

Just found this thread, thought I'd stop in and say Hey! Lots of great riding around here, but no "serious" twisties.(I know the 5&dime route, nice) My pop bought land up the "hill" west of covington and plans to start building a cabin this spring. I will likely be going up that way to help out when I can(without bike), but I may try to take a couple 3-4 day weekends and just point into the wind and go. I am seriously considering attending a Cornerspeed Riderschool at VIR sometime this spring/summer as well. Ride safe! tank |

Whoa.. Tank.. Uh, what do you consider 'Serious Twisties"? I'm just curious, since we have some really great roads that have some really nice bits of tight and twisted blacktop... I know in the Williamsburg area there probably aren't too many tight roads, however, to the north and west (especially the west) there are some classic roads. You gotta ride more out that way. Try this.. Next time you're in Covington, take a nice relaxing trip.. Hop on 159 South, take it to 311 S into Roanoke.. Stop for lunch. Hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway North, Hop on 43 North, 43 to 220 N to 615/621. Right on 616 into Lowmoor. Back onto 64 for the last couple of miles into Covington. It's about 150 miles or so but you may find a couple of those roads are pretty nice. For serious twisties.. well.. Let me know and I'll see what I can pull out of my brain.. |

Whoa.. Tank.. Uh, what do you consider 'Serious Twisties"? Umm... I guess I got spoiled at Deals Gap last summer. I met some great folks from Wisconsin(from Badweb), who were much, much better/more experienced riders than I. They were fast, but had respect for the slow guy too(me). And I liked it too much, I guess That's why I am planning a trip to VIR for the Riderschool and maybe a trackday the next day. Their schedule page has May 15-16 posted but no registration info yet. I sent mail to inquire a couple hours ago and should hear back shortly(maybe tomorrow). To be honest, I haven't been to Covington in a few years, so I'm not real familiar with the area. But, I will keep your suggestion handy!! tank |

Now if you're gonna be in Covington with your bike I'd advise letting us know. A few pages up is the Roanoke Valley fast&Loose. As of right now there are only two of us posting. But I know a very nice route starting and ending in Covington. Once the weather nicens up I'm sure we could wrangle a few Buellers loose. Get the big Virginia Atlas&Gazetteer. That thing is awesome for spotting curvy roads. Check out the loop starting south on route18 into Paint Bank and on through to New Castle on 311. Turn around and take 311 all the way to 159 and back to Covington. The portion of 311 you run between Paint Bank and New castle is just fantastic. I'm jonesing just looking at the map and typing all this! Once it warms up I hope to see more new Bueller's. NUTS |

BLUBLAK, that is a great ride you described above. We did that for a BRAG ride last summer. Starting in Roanoke instead of Covington. We had 8 Buells and a total of 10 bikes. Man I've got to get back riding again. NUTS |

Tank.. Surrre.. Throw Deals Gap in there .. Damn, man, you are gonna be hard to please.. but I know we can do it! hehehehehe.. Next time you are up here (N. Va) with your ride, let me know.. I'll show you a few roads that may give you that warm twisted feeling.. hehehehehe.. While we may not have anything as famous, I think we have a couple of roads that are serious cases of 'Grin-Itous'. Nuts.. hey been a while since I've ridden down there.. Have they ever done any work on 43 from the Parkway to dang, I can't remember the name of that town.. Anyway, if I remember right, there are a few 'check your six' turns on that road. Just wondering.. May try to get down there again this year. If it works out, I'll drop ya line and we can get out for a few miles.. (Message edited by BluBlak on February 13, 2006) |

hey, Glad to see input on the Va. by ways... other great roads I have found are acessed from rt 11 . anywhere between Harrisonburg to Lexington... 42 to 39 , 250 from Staunton to Monterey... Be careful on the one laners though.. Gravel gets kicked out by all the farm equipment...if ever near Elkton, drop me a note here.. we are always up at the cabin.. a good place to stretch and get a cup .. cheers and be safe. |

BluBlak, the city is either Buchanan or further on Eagle Rock. The tightest is the stretch from the BRP to Buchanan. It is seriously scary in that direction, more fun if you head towards the BRP. The stretch from Buchanan to Eagle rock was undergoing repaving as of late last summer. I love those roads! Bloochdog, my folks were trying to buy some land in Elkton about 2 years ago. I've been by once on the bike and I think it is still vacant. Right off 33 and 624 I think. Where abouts is this cabin? I'm trying to find some more inroads of getting my folks to move up this way! Well finally warmed up enough to check out route 43 from Buchanan up to the BRP. It is dirty, let me tell you, but a hoot nonetheless. Put a total of 91 miles on the Lightning today and didn't see Park Ranger one. The Parkway sure is more fun at 55 than 65. I've got about 70 miles to go to meet my goal of 200 this week. Ride on fellas. NUTS |
