One Footnote to our trip to D.C.

I don't know if anyone was aware that I bought a Lotto South ticket on our last potty stop on the way up. It was the one where the rail road workers had one side of the road closed and the girl kept running back and forth from her car at the pumps to the store. You know the one we all followed with our eyes. Yeah that one. I won. So what do you buy when you already have a Ulysses?

So what do you buy when you already have a Ulysses?

Potential answers are:
1. You dump a bunch of $$$ into the M2 and make it the nasty, all-out, scare the crap outta yourself with every ride bike.
2. You wait until January 23rd and try and find one that someone will sell you! You form the C3 in 3D racing team and take the whole C3 group to Daytona with you.
Those of you who weren't with us for Saturday's dinner this one won't make any sense to you (until January 23rd, that is).
3. A toupee! Hey, I'm allowed one recommendation that is not serious, right?

So, Carlos, what ARE you going to do with that $5?

A ride sounds good to me. Saturday is supposed to be beautiful. What direction sounds good?

Also, just want to say again what a blast last weekend was. To quote Carlos:"The show was good, the company was better."

Larry - I thought jackpot was $3.5 Million, but I end up with 5.

Brankin - No, I like the natural look, so I thought about letting my beard grow out like SportyMark's and Spike's and do the comb over. Since we have a Sporty and Spike, I would jump in and change my handle to Spooky.

Dave - No I wouldn't buy him one either but maybe some KISS shoes so we can get him on a Ulysses.

C3 in 3D!!!

Mark. I think I know which house that is. I'm at 226 Heidinger Just off Seabrook and Coorsdale. I don't have a garage but I have a large storage building at the end of my driveway that I keep the bikes in. I use it as a shop that is if I can keep my wife from putting stuff in there. She thinks it's like a utility building to put garden stuff in there. What gives with that? I tell her thats why we have a crawl space or empty back yard. Anyone ride to work this morning? I was planing to but when I went to leave at 5:30 am I could see my breath and I just brushed my teeth so I know it wasn't from them. Only 28 degrees. I ride from Cary to Clayton about 25 miles. It would of been nice on the way home tho.

i thought about it, but the 15 miles on I-40 in sub freezing was not my cup of tea.

On the upside, I might have found a house, only a one car garage, but plenty of room for bikes, and a big driveway/parking pad!

Where is the house? If the garage is big that means you need more bikes.

I know everyone will be surprised, but I rode to work today. I believe the news said it was 34° when I left for work just before 8:00 this morning. Nothing to it, just smile and wave boys, er... I mean grin and bear it. I have one question though. If it's so dang warm out, why did I get a fuel oil bill yesterday for $150? I wonder why I don't see anybody taking advantage of solar for supplementing energy. As much as the sun is shining down here it sure is bound to make up for the innefficiency it may have. Suddenly I find myself 2 cents short, once again.

Skeeter_xb,
I'm not sure who all will be going to Homecoming. One person from the area was asking questions about where to stay (Note to self: I owe Hotrats some answers now that there is no host hotel...). I believe some others that were interested last year but were unable to make it may also be interested this year. It will be interesting to see what happens now that the BRAG portion of it is decreased (maybe I will not need to take as many vacation days...but it will suck as well as I won't be back at home for very long then). I haven't checked out what Dana, Spidey, et al are setting up yet, so hopefully there will be some saving grace from them. I am planning on staying at my parents place though (or maybe at a friends closer to where interesting action may take place). Last year I only spent the money to stay at the host hotel so that Frank would be in the middle of everything for his first Homecoming. He had talked about coming back for another Homecoming, shortly after he got back to Germany and went to the Mid Summer Meeting of BORG and met another European guy who had attended Homecoming, but I'm not sure how his interest level is with so few activities. All of this makes me wonder...Hmmm, should I take more vacation time for Daytona? Well, then again, the only real BIG Buell attraction at Daytona will be the 200...So maybe extra vacation will be a waste...

Since nobody has chimed in, I will ask:
Is anyone interested in going to Homecoming this year?

Oh yeah, Spankey, that's funny as Hell!

Ok I wimped out again this morning. Last night I said I was going to ride in to work but I got a cold chill as soon as I walked out the door this morning and went right over to the Jeep and got in. 25 Miles on I-40 at 5:30am is cold. I was planing on riding up to see my brothers in Mich this summer. Tell me again when is Homecoming? Have you ever taken the Milwaukee Clipper across Lake Michigan? I think they still make the runs.

Dear Buell,

Due in part to the rampant technological advancement of electronics, modern ignition coils are capable of sending the current needed to generate spark further than three inches down a plug wire. Armed with this information, you should now be able to find a plug wire length that allows at least a modicum of serviceability.

Dear Ray Price HD/Buell parts department,

The Buell XB models use what's known as a "v-twin" engine. The "twin" refers specifically to the number of cylinders in the motor. Since there are two cylinders, the engine is required to have at least two spark plugs. Since there are two spark plugs, the vehicle requires two spark plug wires. Since the vehicle requires two spark plug wires, it should occur to you that the appropriate stock level for XB plug wires is two. When an XB owner comes to your store and discovers that you only stock one plug wire, he will be disappointed. Please adjust your stock levels as needed.

I guess I just had to ride. I took my five bucks, put a half a tank of gas in the bike and rode to work Thursday & Friday.

Today I got out of work on time so I decided I needed to talk to John Martindale at Shelton about the BRAG chapter and see if by chance they had a pin for the foot peg on the Uly. So off to Goldsboro from Kinston I went via what turned out to be every dirt road I could find. I found some good ones too. We have been looking for twisty paved roads around here for several years now, but I guess I had fun today looking for dirt roads.

I passed one road that looked promising so I turned around and went down it. The road went about five miles through some twists, by houses and fields. It's interesting what you find off the beaten path. Some neat old houses, a woman on horse back, a couple of hunters training their dogs while one of their daughters drew a picture in the dirt of the road. I felt bad riding over it. The hunters' jaws were hanging down as I passed them. I just took the C3 moto, "just smile and wave boys!"

In southern Lenior county I found a dirt road neighborhood. I though I took a straight road that connected two paved roads because I could see a stop sign at the other end. As I near the intersection, I see that the cross road is also a dirt road. It was pretty cool because there were several dirt roads back there.

One road was called Sand Pit RD. No points for creativity, it had a sand pit at the end of it. The moto-journalist have pinned the Uly's capabilities well. It can track through mud, but its only marginally better than any other street bike on sand.

Another dirt road took me by what looked like the perfect house. A true fixer-upper, but the main two story house looked well maintained at about 1800-2000 sq-ft. It connected by what looked like an enclosed two-story hallway to another two-story building which was perpendicular to the main house. It was not so well maintained but looked like 3000 sq-ft plus. The place looked like an old factory. It had a small water tower behind it and the house sat on top of a hill overlooking the river near Seven Springs. Too cool. A main house connected to a house for the toys.

The road the house was on wound down next to the Neuse river. As I go down a hill and around a bend, I noticed a field with a sign posted, "No Hunting". What was missing was "No Trespassing". Tracks in the field seamed to be from a ATV. So I rode out into the field which was plowed and resting for winter. Luckily it was not too soft and the Uly went right through it. I got to the far side to the field which was all up hill and I saw that on the other side drainage was not so good and there was standing water. So I turned around and rode back to the dirt road and back to Hwy 55.

About a mile down hwy 55, I saw a turn out on the other side of the road. I decided to turn in and investigate. I saw a two track trail that follows power lines. I can not see very far down the trail because there was a rise that blocked what was behind it. So I decided to go blind and see what was there. As I climb to the top of the rise I see that the trail goes straight but a lot of elevation changes and not driven down in a while because of the vegetation on the trail. So I decide to good down the hill and see where it goes. As I get about half the way down the first hill I noticed that it turned to sand and very rutted. I pick a rut and continue down the hill when I see the rut I'm on is cut by another rut cut by drainage from past rain storms. I realize I'm about to wash out the front tire so I slow and brace for it. Sure enough the front starts to wash out. I stopped and was able to get my feet down and stabilize the bike. I was glad to have the low seat. I thought, boy, I need to turn around, but it was too late. I was committed until the top of the next rise. So down the rest of the hill I went and up the other side. When I topped the hill I realize that I will end up in someones backyard. Hi honey, I'm home. Nope, did not want to go that route so I finally find a place to turn around. I do the three point turn and back the other way I go. When I get to the bottom of the hill, I decide to power through the sand wash out and see what happens. I thought the momentum of the bike would keep it going. I was right, but the bike did not just go straight though it. As I climbed the hill, the bike slid around and I felt the back end break traction and slide the bike sideways. I wasn't going fast but kept the power on and the front pointing where I wanted to go. The bike did beautifully. As I crest the hill and came in view of hwy 55 traffic, I could see driver's looking at me surprised by such a big bike coming out of what looked like an ATV trail. The looks were priceless.

So I roll on. I ride through Sleepy Creek. My hand was tired from working the clutch on the trail. I think to myself that a lower ratio would work better if I was going to do serious off-roading. I realized that the jaunt down and up the sand wash out spooked me more than dragging my pant leg at 80mph on the road (The closest I've been to putting a knee down though a curve). It was a kick in the pants.

I get to the dealership and John and I talk about the BRAG chapter. We decide to go ahead and renew the chapter for another year and keep the officers the same. I figure if we want to change it later we can, but since I've mentioned BRAG business no one spoke up, so I just did the Director thing and John and I signed the new year's form and turned it in. So we are official for another year.

After checking if Shelton's had the pin for the passenger foot peg, yeah right, John and I start walking up front to where I parked the Uly. Now I've been off-roading for thirty miles and the bike is dirty and had dead bugs all over it. As I see out the front window, I see the the three guys looking the Uly over. I walk out with John and one of the three starts asking the usual questions, So how do you like it? He is a Harley guy so I don't know if he will understand what I'm about to tell him (get a bike dirty on purpose?), but I go ahead. I start telling him about my adventures going to the dealer and he starts talking about what he has and what he use to have. I realize this guy is not a normal Harley guy. Fisrt clue was that he had a 98 Road King with 42,000 miles. A Harley with five digit mileage, now that's unusual, I thought. He did admit though the he probably put 42,000 gallons of water on it cleaning it. Now that is more typical Harley Guy. He said he use to have what he called Cross-Over bikes before the Road King and really wanted another one. He said he looked at the BMW and then a KLR, but he had read about the Uly and wanted to see one. He really liked it and was pretty hooked on it.

As me and the guy with the Road King are talking in pulls in a bike I could not identify. At first I though it was a Buell, but something was wrong. By this time it was dark, so as the bike closed all I could make out was a small two headlight bike with one side lit up. I though maybe a Tiger, but no as the bike pulled in the light, it was an Elefant. I did not know what that was until the rider dismounted and took his helmet off. We passed each other as I walked over to his bike and he walked over to the Uly. He told me he was riding down hwy 70 and saw the Uly parked out front and wanted to see it. So he pulled of and turned around. I asked him about his bike and he explained that an Elefant was sold by Ducati and had a Monster 900 motor. He explained that the bike was actually build by Ducati's parent company at the time and that the bike won the Dakar race back in its day. He too was struck by the Uly in the flesh. I'm thinking to myself, man the bike is dirt, really dirty. I think seeing a Uly dirty is like looking at a 4x4 Truck with mud all over it. It just gives it that rough and tough off-roader look.

All in all a great ride. A learning experience. I know I need to take a dirt bike MSF equivalent. I was guessing on what to do as the trail conditions changed. I was impressed that the Uly parked out front of Shelton's could pull cars and bike alike off the main highway. I think John was impressed too as he stated that their other Uly which is presently at the Smithfield Store needed to come back. I hope he parks it out front. It's even better than a Buell sign. Fun ride all around.

Spike, it's my fault. Sorry. I bought one (1) plug wire a couple of week ago from RP/HD/Buell. I think it made their world shift on its axis.

CLear diaelectirc grease on the tips of the plugs and in the ends of the wire really help installation.

Jim, does Rebecca know you think like that?

Carlos, that sounded like fun. I'd would have been a little concerned about those hunters though. You were still riding in Lenoir Co after all. But alas, that's what that bike is all about and that's why you bought it. It looks like the Uly is unlocking some pent up passions in folks who had given up and had gone to riding what everyone else was riding. I hope that means that Buell sells lots of Ulys, which in turn will wake up some of these dealers, which is good for everyone.

Let's kick it around for this week and get some decision to "recertify" and if so, list of officers by this time next week.

I for one am sorry that no one spoke up, but I thought we were giving everyone til the weekend to think about it. I wouldn't mind being director if others are agreeable. Would you still be interested in any officers position?

Anyone else interested in being an officer? We need help.
