When are the Chicago guys heading over there and what route are they taking? I wouldn't mind riding with from Janesville.

Got back from the Gap today. Awsome roads, it's hard to believe that a road could be built with turns that close together. There were 4 accidents on the first day. All were riding firebolts. My friend Henry, was holding his bolt up from the side when it rolled into a pothole flipping him over and breaking his collar bone. He never even left the resort. It rained all night Fri., but did that stop anyone? I can't believe how crazy some of those guys are, wet leaves and all, they continue to ride. One guy was coming down 28 from the resort "too hot", blew the first turn highsiding into an arrow sign. Breaking his back, air lifted out, still paralyzed from the waist down. Another guy had the recalled kick stand on his Firebolt, and it broke at one of the welds, causing him to catipult. So much for quality control. All in all, I had a great time. I camped at the Fontana Village for $15 a night. It was one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to. Huge sites right at the bottom of the TVA Dam. We should get a group thing going there next spring and camp. The sites could accomidate about 6 tents each. Just an idea.

Hum, Sunday? That sounds possible. I was just up there last weekend in my Subaru. Freaking awesome in a car too. I was racing a supercharged Mini Cooper which is very respectable in the small car category.

if I was in the car market, Mini or WRX would be about my choices . . . . as far as cars go, I'm thinking THESE are the good old days!

My WRX impresses me more and more every day. Its a little slow off the line due to the turbo lag but I hear you gotta buy the catalytic converter eliminator and its gone completely.

But on those roads you already have speed built up so the turbo lag is non existant. I had so much fun that I had to pull over so the girl I was with puke due to car sickness.

The big problem with those roads north of Monroe is that there are a ton of blind turns and blind hillcrests that can hide farm equipment and slower traffic. I bet if you had a scout and a team with chatterboxes then the lead could clear the road for the main element.

BTW John, I rented that Mel Gibson movie We Were Soldiers and I was really impressed. Did you see that one. It treats the N Vietnamese army more fairly than most, meaning that it treats them as worthy adversaries rather than faceless animals. There is some great discussion of command tactics on both sides that gives you a different appreciation of the battle.

Chi . . . . this is the worst time of year for Wisconsin backroad scratching, in one way . . . .the farm equipment thing . . . a harvester will ruin your enitre day if you let it!

nossir, havn't seen the movie, but read the book . . . .gave me the heebiejeebies for a week . . . . no one I knew EVER thought the NVA were faceless animals . . . . in fact, most of us felt more kinship with them than we did with what was laughingly called our leadership

as a sidenote, I was in that area some years after the battle portrayed in the book/movie . . . most battlesites were picked clean the next day . . . this one still had webgear, helmets, and like that everywhere . . . very, I mean VERY spooky

I'm not saying that our troops thought they were faceless animals. I am saying that movies like Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and even Forest Gump didn't give them the respect they deserve as a fighting force.

Bomber,

Are you still going to produce the monthly Windy City newsletter? If not, I volunteered to carry the torch at the last meeting. Let me know your intentions, as I could use some initial help if things transition. Thanks.

John, don't mean to set anyone straight. I was just trying to be more clear. I think its always important to respect the enemy. So often the govt, Hollywood, the media or something else tends to fill the void with simple good vs evil and we should all know by now that's never the case.

Most of our troops were just doing what they were told or what they thought was right. Most of the public was too stoned to care.

and the govt was too stupid to get it all right from the start.

Chi . . . . an insightful observation . . . . and correct as well . . . the folks I was with were a little out of the main stream, and had great respect (and some fondness) for the NVA

the most frustrating thing about it, for me, is that we had a perfect example of what NOT to do right in front of us (the french consistantly made stupid errors) . . . . we replicated those errors, right on down the line, perfectly, with pretty much the same results

a buddy of mine defines insanity as "repeating the same actions again and again while expecting a different result"

The beating will continue until morale improves? Is that what you are trying to say?

The movie pretty much paints the politicians as not taking 100% of the necessary actions required to achieve the appropriate conclusion. LBJ didn't want to declare an emergency action because that would require congressional approval. But by not doing this he kept enlistments open and all the good seasoned troops chose to get out before they got sent away.

The movie also showed how much care LTC Moore took when studying the enemy and selecting his inner command element. He did the best with what he had been given and I think that pretty much stands for all the troops over there.

I think its a case for runnaway govt or at least runnaway presidential powers.

I also think that the movie tried to show how new and unproven the helicopter was to combat.
