Shazam, my name is Kevin Haney and I having been working on HD motors for a couple of days now. If you are blowing oil out of the transmission vent line, ( the one coming out of the back of the crankcases, that routes up the frame and out the back of the motorcycle under the tail section) there are 2 causes. First is over filling, only 1 quart of lube goes in the transmission. Second is pressurization of the transmission by the down stroke of the pistons. Pressure can leak into the transmission from the engine seal to sprocket spacer seal, or (this is very unlikly) the lack of crankcase sealant between the crankcase halves. You should be able to do a pressure check on your transmission cavity. It would be the same test that you would do on an old 2-stroke engine. Richieg150 if your exhaust looks like a 2-stroke going down the road, I think the wrist pin on one of the pistons has come out on wore a channel in your cylinder. A leak down test or compression test will not show this problem. V2win had 2 badly seized cylinders and still had 180 lbs. of compression. I prefer the inspection process instead of the guessing process (the motor needs to come apart). | ||

Kevin, I appreciate your comments, I have never put more than 7/8ths of a quart of sport-trans in there. I have a service manual. I relocated the vent tube due to the fact that doing LOOOOOONG wheelies would submerge the existing vent hole location and quickly lower the level of fluid in the trans. I should probably preface this a little by saying that I have a custom tail section that prohibits the routing of the vent hose up into the sub-frame, for a while I had it running along the swingarm adjacent to the rear brake line. this would cause it to syphon some when there was fluid in the line. I have since relocated the open end up near the fuel filter and horn location. Now it only leaks at sustained high RPM. I can live with that. However when I was doing all this I put a clear poly-eurethane hose on it so that I could see what was going on in the tube. when I run it fluid starts pushing up the tube to a point where pressure in the case does not exceed it's ability to drain it back, and the whole world is happy, except I can watch a constant stream of bubbles pushing up the tube. So yes I am pushing air into the trans, but replacing the seal at the crank didn't cure it. I would expect to see dirty oil in the trans if the crankseal was bad. The transmission cavity is designed to hold fluid not under pressue, a pressure test would just blow out the shifter shaft seal. Let me say I am suspecting blow-by and a bad crank seal (like you suggest). due to my own stupidity, because I didn't have the cyl's honed when I did the rings either time(I did carefully seat them though). John ... "When in doubt, always go bigger, and use more than one ..." ;-) Halon was always the best but I think it's pretty much been outlawed. If you go dry powder you may as well just carry a box/shaker of baking soda. It's good tooth paste and wimmin' use it to clean in the bathrooms I'm told. ;-) S1W update ... bike is back together after rebuilding starter solenoid. Oh and Josh (or anyone that knows for sure)...Since you seem to be racing on the track..I'm interested in going to a track day of some kind. What kind of gear do they require you to have as far as leathers and bike setup? | ||

Neville McNaughton, Ron Walkup and I did not leave the QT until about 11 a.m...We rode in light rain for a bit but it stopped completely by the time we were passing St Albans...Just one more sprinkle a bit latter...By the time we were out on YY the roads were starting to show some dry spots...The rear tire on Neville's L-O-N-G T-E-R-M test Tiger was about toasted...But the wear pattern was the classic left side much more so than the right...I know he was VERY glad to see drying roads...The ride down took us about three hours...The second half much quicker than the first...Saw a chicken crossing the road on Old Manchester...Didn't stop to ask why?... The restaurant was really neat...You park your ride and they teleport you to the base of a cliff on the Gasconade...Then it's into an elevator for about a four story ride up the cliff face...The owner greets you with "Welcome to the Cave"...Neville and I chose baby back ribs and Ron had a pork sandwich...Ron and I ordered their seasoned ranch fries while Neville had plain french fries...As it turned out Neville's fries were unedible as they had a really strange taste (bat guano maybe?) and left a very unpleasant after taste...As Ron and my fries were very good I asked and they said they slice the potatoes for the ranch fries but the regular ones are bought frozen...Maybe frezzer burn or a thaw and re-freeze?...Who knows?...The BBQ was top shelf...The quality of the ribs was better than what Super Smokers serves in their restaurants...I've had the ribs SS uses for competition and that is about the quality of the Caveman's meat...A lot of meat on the bone...Neville sweet talked the server into a comp piece of cheese cake that was good...Prices were a bit steep but what do you expect when you consider the effort to serve you in a cave...There was an outside spiral steel staircase and I asked if that was their fire escape and was told that it was...But the owner also said that was the only way to get up the cliff face with their tools, concrete, etc during the building process... We should also report that whether you come in from the east or west you will ride a bit on gravel...Much less so from the MO 7 western access and that was the route of our arrival...They routed us east and that was several miles of gravel as opposed to only about one from the west...These gravel roads were very well graded and we could travel comfortably at about fifty...Well, Neville and I were comfy but Ron's stiff 954 suspension was probably not too much fun... Ron and Neville, thanks for taking the lead at various times...It was really great to sit back and watch the two of you ride...Neville commented that he enjoyed watching Ron flow through the corners and I couldn't agree more...Ron led me home and it was most excellent... As reported Neville did an interstate blast home while Ron and I did 28/63/42/28/50...The bottom part of 28 was a blast...Once as we traversed three linked downhill turns Ron just commented with a big "thumbs up"...It was a bit wierd, though, to see so much wildlife active so early in the day...Multiple deeries, turkey, the aforementioned chicken, a black cat...If was also pretty apparent that the storm there had been much worse than what we had in Eureka as there were several cases of really bad gravel wash ons from driveways...I later heard that the end of the runway in Vichy was covered with gravel... As usual, the price we paid on the front end of this ride was well worth the reward... See Ya Tomorrow! Bob | ||

Frank, It'll depend on the organizers of the track day. But if you have zip-together leathers you should be ok any where but a sanctioned race. I normally wear my Aerostitch for track days and jeans/jacket for drag racing. But I haven't done either in a while. Josh | ||

Track day info .... http://www.mcraracing.com/ Follow the track day links ... as Josh said, Aerostich is acceptable a long with zip together leathers. During past track days, MSRA had package deals that got ya leathers at a reduced price. Told my son the S1W was makin' my ass sore after ridin' about 60 miles or so. I told him I needed to adjust the handlebars. He kinda cocked his head at and angle and got this silly grin on his face and suggested I try out sittin' on the seat instead of the 'handle' bars next time I ride. Damn smart ass .... hahaha ;-) DAve | ||

BattleTrax, Got up there about 9:45. They were just finishing up laying out the track. Huge new parking lot, long layout. Started running about 11 (I think) I was #11. A couple Buells (X1, "military" m2, MadMax S1, silver S3, couple of Blasts) a bunch of huskys and honda dirtbikes (XR100) some sport bikes incl a Duc 748 (sweet) and a couple cruisers incl some ElectraGlides. At one point I turned around and saw a "furry" sportbike parked next to the support truck with one of the infamous "StarBoyz" in attendence. He left (on one wheel) before riding the course but later on another "StarBoy" showed up and rode the track. I missed the performance but he apparantly wadded spectacularly. Twice. Really tore up the bike (and his arm). I think CVPS sells StarBoyz stunt videos, just FYI. Ok, track was fun, but with a couple of entirely too tight turns. I never did get used to running the S3 at idle while leaned. Ever since this new muffler it just doesn't run smooth at low RPMs and I found myself playing with the clutch and throttle trying to keep the RPMs up. The Blast was much better. I ran about 8 times but only got times from the first (1.36) and last 2 (1.22, 1.22) while by then the X1 and S1 were about 1.15. The xr100s and huskys were running 1.05-1.10. I had to leave before the competition started (about 2:30) but it was a good time. Other than the StarBoy, 2 electraglides went down, both on one of the sharp-corner-at-a-dead-stop turns. great day, no rain really nice downtown/ riverfront area. josh (in class for the week) | ||
