I'm looking at a 03 Dyna Superglide Sport Touring. It has a carburetor, low miles; it's in excellent condition, from the photos only. Are there any problems with that year or model? Thanks | ||

I have an '01, with about 12,000 miles on it. The only problem I have had with it is a failed "quad seal", which is the seal between the primary and the transmission shaft. Check for oil under the primary case towards the rear of the bike. Many riders have found the original equipment Dunlop tires to be extremely low quality in terms of handling and have replaced them with Avons or Metzlers. Normally, the suspension is set up much softer than would be best if you want the best handling from the bike. Other handling improvements are a front fork brace and steering damper. Floating rotors are available for the brakes, and they help too. All together, one of the best handling Harleys if properly set up. The motor is way under stressed, which is probably good, and the horsepower can be doubled if money is not a big problem. Here is mine with a Lapera barebones seat, and a Buell front fender.  | ||

I have a 2000 FXDX with about 45,000 miles on it. It has been a pretty trouble free bike. I have had the fork seals replaced twice, the last time getting new fork tubes as well. I do have a recurring problem with my front brakes getting soft over time and having to release the calipers. It is an easy, but temporary fix that the shops have not been able to permanently take care of. Overall a great bike. I have gone more the touring route with my FXDX with a big Mustang seat, mini ape hangers off the Wide Glide, saddle bags, and a compact windshield. I have done an Iron Butt Saddle Sore (1000 miles in 24 hours) ride with no problem and just got back from riding it to North Carolina, riding in the mountains for a few days, and riding back to Florida. Honestly, I'd love to have a Uly, but my FXDX is still a great bike with some advantages (in my opinion anyway). | ||

I'm not sure if the design was improved for 2003 (someone will know) but my 2002 Road King had to have the cam chain tensioner shoes replaced at 17000 miles. They were so bad they were about to come apart. That's an expensive job if you are not doing it yourself and the timing cover has to be pulled to check it. | ||

The cam chain tensioner is an issue on the 2000's like mine as well. That slipped my mind. At the 40,000 mile service the tech told me it was making a troublesome noise and wanted to check it out (for a charge of course). I was not sure what noise he was talking about, as the engine has made quite a few noises the whole time I have owned the bike, but I hadn't noticed any new ones. I'm not a mechanic, though, so I authorized the look. When the mechanic got everything apart though, he said everything looked good. So, he put it back together and now I am at 45,000 miles. I will probably replace the cam chain tensioner replaced at 50,000 miles no matter what. Unless I trade it in on a Buell. | ||

04 for FI. I replaced my cam chain bs with gear drive @ 42k. The shoes were close. Bike scrapes a little on hard right turns. Lefts just drag a peg. | ||

I had a 2001. Was my first HD I got back in 2003. I had it till November of 2004. Sold it with about 12000 miles on it. I talked to the owner a couple years ago and he had 68000 miles on it. Take care of it and it will take care of you. The TC88 motors are very solid when cared for. The cam chain tensioners are the most complained about problem. Enjoy! | ||

...it's my favorite HD built, that and the VROD. Unfortunately, a lot of them are running around with forward pegs and controls. Forward pegs are nice for highway runs, but the bike really comes alive with mid pegs. | ||
