Hi all, I live in Northern Ireland and have owned 4 Harleys - 2 883 Sportsters, a Fat Boy and my favourite by a long way - my current 2005 FXDXI Superglide Sport in black with the Screamin' Eagle 1550cc upgrade, Stage 2, high-lift cams etc. and lowered gearing. I'm thinking of buying a 2008 XB12Scg in Cherry Bomb as a 2nd bike (can't sell the Superglide Sport) and have a few questions. a) Am I mad? b) I like how the Buell rides, but how will all aspects of ownership differ. Are the 2008 bikes reliable, can they be left outside under a cover and still start easy, etc. etc. Many thanks. (Message edited by cloudbreaker on September 22, 2008) |

a) Possibly, but I don't see that as a bad thing. b) Others much more qualified to answer that than me. All I can really say is I am happy with my FXDX, but I want a Buell as well. |

Cloud- 1. Are you mad? Well, let's see. I am not a real psychiatrist, but frankly, it's not looking too good for you. I mean, living in N. Ireland, owning 4 Harleys, is that considered normal where you come from? 2. Aspects of ownership- I know what you mean. I owned two Buells, (one at a time), before I bought my first Harley, and I was a bit concerned about how owning one might differ from owning a Buell, a subject to which I had devoted a lot of time and effort. In the USA, at least, I found owning a Buell to be a more pleasant experience for several reasons. Firstly, Buells are immeasurably better designed and built than Harleys. Secondly, the community of riders seem to me to be better informed, more knowledgeable and very willing to help a fellow Buelligan. Thirdly, this web site provides an unparalleled resource in support of owning, riding and repairing one's Buell. Nothing quite like it on the Harley side that I know of. Fourth, I found to my pleasant surprise, that whilst riding a Harley and a Buell simply could not be more different, there is an unmistakable family similarity mechanically speaking, so that if one is used to fettling one's own Harleys, working on a Buell will seem somewhat familiar, although many things are quite different. Finally, a possible downside is the matter of dealer support. Over here, the dealer support for Harleys is simply abysmal, and that for Buells is non existent. There are a very few exceptions to this rule, most of which are sponsors of this board. One imagines that the situation in N. Ireland is not much different. Just my .02ยข |

"Over here, the dealer support for Harleys is simply abysmal". In the USA? I've never found that to be the case, unless your bike is more than 7 years old. After 7 years most parts are all still available, they would just rather sell you a new bike! |

The guy has a dealer fool with his bike once or twice, and then decides it's safer to do it himself or have an independent shop work on it. Sound familiar, anyone?

In fairness to my local HD dealer, I have found them competent on the very few repairs I have needed. They almost never get the bike done when they say they will, but for the most part the work is done fine. I have had two fairly minor disputes with the service department, one was solved in a fair way I believed, while the other was not. About average for customer service these days I'd say. |

I have read good things on this forum about the FXDX and now I am looking to buy. I was wondering if the FXDXT was worth searching out. I think that they are more uncommon what do you all think? Are the saddle bags and windshield anything special, or could i just get a FXDX and add as good or better aftermarket parts? |

I have always wondered how well the fairing worked on the FXDXT. I looked into getting one from HD to put on my bike, but the cost was prohibitive. I've never much cared for the bags on the FXDXT. The ones I've seen haven't held up that great over the years either. I really like my aftermarket bags. I've finally gotten a windshield I don't hate as well, but it has taken some trial and error. I'm afraid that's all the help I can be. |

It took me three sets of bags from different companies over the years, but I finally bought these and really like them. There are bags I like better, but from a quality/price standpoint I am very happy. In fact pictures of these bags on my bike are on his website. http://www.leatherneckjims.com/shop/index.php?main _page=product_info&cPath=21_22&products_id=52 For my windshield, I also went through several ones trying to find one that gave good protection without buffeting. I don't know if I'm too picky, but getting something I was happy with was a challenge. I ended up with a HD quick detach windshield like this, but I had 3 inches cut off it. Now I can see over it, which is important to me because I seem to find myself riding in the rain from time to time and I had a hard time seeing through a windshield in the rain, and the protection is still acceptable. Plus buffeting is pretty minimal up to about 80 and really isn't bad up to about 90. I love the FXDXT - the fairing works very well, is height/angle adjustable (windscreen part), and the bags are quite nice and expandable. Dammit, now you've got me thinking about getting an HD again to go with the Buells.... |

I'm still old school, and ride my '93 FXRSC daily to work and back, switching off every other week with the Ugly, I mean Uly. My FXR, with 122,000 miles on the Odo, has had it's share of issues thru the years, but still gets me where I need to go when I need it to. I've still got the stock bags, and windshield which I use depending on the weather and temp. I've upgraded the suspension front and rear, and personalized it slightly to keep myself entertained. I'd love to get a dyna, but after buying an '08 XT this past spring, I just can't justify the expense simply to replace something that is still working very well, for something that is shiny and may work a little better. Maybe next year... |
