I am rotating my engine. And everything seems to be right. But I can't get the front isolator bolt off. I am using an allen key with a breaker bar and i still cant get it. I thought maybe the engine would rotate down without having to take off the front isolator mount but i was wrong. It woun't rotate down. And the only thing that i have not taken off is the front isolater bolt. I am doing it strictly by the book. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. I am really flustered. Thanks |

Ok I found out it was the rear isolater bolt that I needed to take out all the way. The service manual says to loosen the bolt but you really need to take the rear isolater bolt out all the way. Alright so I get that done and i start to slowly drop the engine down but it still didn't go down all the way(enough to get to the rear header gasket). So I looked all around the engine and the only thing I could find that looked like it was stopping the engine from dropping was these two tubes that run between the engine and the rear shock. So I lifted the engine all the way back up and just put it back together. I am to the point of just throwing the headers back on without changing the rear header gasket. Will this be a problem(putting the headers back on without having a new gasket installed)? |

is the gasket leaking? if its not leakin dont worry. i just painted the frame on my bike and reused all the gaskets |

You DO NOT remove the rear isolator bolt to rotate the engine. Disconnect the battery. Remove the mount at the top of the engine.(under the air filter mount) Remove the outer most bolt from the mount near the starter.(right side of bike) Remove the left side foot peg bracket.(3 allens) Loosen the rear wheel to give the belt some slack. (very loose) Remove the belt tensioner. Place a jack under the exhaust and take some tension off the mounts. Remove the oil cooler/engine mount.(2 allens on the left side and 1 on the right) Loosen the rear isolator bolt. Remove the front isolator bolt and slowly lower the front of the engine. Watch the harness to make sure you have the slack you need. |

Thanks for the info. I am putting new headers on the bike. I got the old gasket out and put the new one in. so I should be looking good. Thanks for the help. (Message edited by lpd22 on February 27, 2005) |

My brother and I just replaced the headers his 12R. We didn't rotate the engine though. We removed the bracket that holds the oil cooler on. We also had to remove the tail section, rear shock, and fan. Getting the headers off this way was a bit tricky. We had to remove the clip and bracket for the rear cylinder so we could twist the headers up and slide them out. The bracket was in the way because the O2 sensor wouldn't clear the frame. The front was no problem. The other tricky part was getting them back on. We had to put the headers on and then put the bracket and clip on while the headers were already in place. We figured this was easier then rotating the whole engine. The whole project took about 3 hours, but we were slackin' off. |

Lonexb-pics are coming. Waiting on my custom seats and stripes kit. Daveinm- I originally took my headers off the way you explained. But once i received them back from Jet-hot I figured I would give the rotating engine part a try to re-install them. It didn't go as planned as you can see so i put them back on the same way I took them off. Thanks for your help. And I would have to say that going through the fan shock etc... is a little bit easier than dropping the engine. my two cents from expirence. |
