I know what it's like to not be able to ride because of someone else's stupidity. It'll be just about a year from my accident before I can ride again. I hate stupid people, too. |

Man, that sucks. Glad it wasn't worse; those b*****d dogs have killed people. I never figured out why people want jerk dogs like pit bulls. Guess they're trying to make up for lack of manhood or something. OTOH, Golden Retrievers are really cool dogs. I had several growing up and have one now. |

Just to put the improper thought about pit bulls to rest before this starts to turn into a dog bashing site. Pit bulls are not aggressive dogs if properly trained. I have two Labs, one AKC 90lb Chocolate, and one 65lb adopted yellow lab. My chocolate who is not snipped is aggressive toward other male dogs that are not snipped. I'm getting him snipped. I have friends who have Pit Bulls who are not snipped that have never even thought about attacking or being aggressive. They can be walked off the leash if it was allowed, and wouldn't attack unless provoked. Now, it is the owners fault this dog attacked. Number one, it should not have been off the leash, or out of the yard, period. And second, if the dog does have aggressive tendencies, it should be taken care of with training or in my case getting the manhood snipped. They have gotten a bad rap, and it's mostly because they are strong stocky dogs that were bred for fighting, and idiots get them, and make them mean, and what do you think will happen?? Anyway Okinawa, how is your golden? |

don't get me wrong,i know any dog can be mad into a bad-.not picking on pits, just have had a lot of experience with them when i was a deputy in south ga.the ones i dealt with had been bred/trained soley for the purpose of fighting other dogs.i think that is gonna be the case here also.we have heard rumors, but it looks like we will find out the truth soon enough.if it is,someboby is gonna get an article 15.all cause of a wanting to fight dogs, knowing it is illegal as hell over here.but anyway, not bashing the hound, though i don't appreciate him chewing on me.my dog is fine, that is why i am all jacked up. |

It ain't the dog so much as the owner. My brother used to have 6 pits at one time and all but one were good with people, other dogs & children. Yes you heard me, children. I will admit that one was less than good. At age 4, Dillinger developed a small dog complex & had to be alpha where ever he went. No training could break him of this so we did the right thing & kept him fenced in at home & leashed on walks. We loved him but we knew he was a bit off and made sure he couldn't hurt anyone. Eventually my brother found a nice home for him on a ranch where he was happy & content till the day he died. The other 5 pits were given free range as they were "good & friendly". My brother was able to train them very well & never had a problem concerning them. They kinda became an icon of the town for a while. picture if you will one man & 5 pits walking down the side of the road. None of them are on leashes yet they walk in perfect single file & stay close to their human. Sometimes a pit can just simply have a head full of bad wiring simply from it's breeding but that holds true for all breeds. The owner has a responsibility to reconize any bad traits and act upon them. An owner has a responsibility (perhaps I should say obligation)to train his dog properly. If he can not train him, he should either give the dog to someone who can train him or put him down. The dog in this topic clearly should have been fenced in (to protect the people). With all the stories in the media these days, even a pit who is friendly but likes to run up to people (just to say Hi) should also be fenced in (for the dog's safety). |

Sorry to hear about that attack. That sucks. I own a PBT cross myself (also a purebred ACD, but that's another story...). Statements like this tick me off: "I never figured out why people want jerk dogs like pit bulls. Guess they're trying to make up for lack of manhood or something. My PBT is not a "jerk dog"--she's part of my family, a 50-lb lap dog! Anyone trying to "make up for a lack of manhood" by owning a PBT like mine would have a hard time--she might lick someone to death, but that's about as scary as she gets! Now, OTOH, my dogs do NOT run free, willy-nilly wherever they want. And although I've never seen her do anything with kids other than lick them, I do not leave her (or ANY dog) alone and unsupervised with children. |

Geoff- I apologize for lumping all pit bulls and owners in together. I'm sure there are perfectly good I just see a lot of dudes with aggressive (or aggressive-appearing) dogs that obviously like intimidating people with their dogs. In SC, they still arrest someone about every other week for fighting them - I don't get how people can do that to dogs either. |

You knocked the dog out? You are one bad mofo, Bert! I hope the irresponsible dog owner gets what he deserves. Too bad you can't legally knock him out too. |

Thread reminds me of an incident: Many moons ago a pitbull ran out of a guys front door and went after my leg. I was on the guys porch and grabbed the leaded ashtray on the table and started smacking the dog on the head as it grabbed my pants. I got abrasions but no bite-lucky. The guy came after the dog and locked it back up. No harm-no foul. The next day at work I turned it into a practical joke and placed a water and mustard filled baggie in my sock. As I recounted the story I stabbed the "puss-filled wound" with my knife and let it drain into my coffee. As people ran out of the room to puke I couldn't stop laughing. Has to be the best joke I ever played. Hope you feel better. Heal quickly and ride soon. |

Well, here's my 2c. If a dangerous dogs runs free and injures a member of the public. Then SHOOT the damn dog.. (you guys still have guns laws, intruder on property causing GBH.) Sooner or later dog owners have to take responsibility for their animals. Sorry to offend any dog owners whom do take care and control of the animals.. As only a few rottens apples spoil the bunch. I myself have been attacked by a wandering dog, the problem has since been rectified. |

Owners, owners, oenwers. ...period. Can't say it enough. Stupid azz people don't know how to take care of a animal (this applies to any dog) that has in born instincts to be pack leader and challenge( in some cases kill) any one who comes welll within there limits. If the owners would train dogs from the get go, and teach them their place, we wouldn't have stories like this. I have two Doberman Pincher's, a Blue Tick Coon, a chow lab mix, AND A PITBULL!!(and the wife still wants an alarm for the house, ha) Anyway, I don't have problems with any of them. They know who's boss and who isn't. Don't mean to go on, but stupid people and their animals me off!! I know that being in the military, that guy will have more reprocussions than just his dog being put down. OKI- I'M gonna go ride round the block in your honor just so I can cool off. |

Dayum Bert, Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope you heal up soon so you can ride! Any word from the Doc on how long before you're better? As an aside-I was waxing the truck tonight and two houses down from me some jerkoffs were making their two pitbulls fight. They were of course off the leash in the front yard...Then they put the dogs in the garage and one of the dumb $hits was shooting the dogs with a bb gun for laughs. I'll be calling the cops in the morning about that crap. Can't believe what some fkn jerkoffs do with their dogs...it's definitely ALL about the owners! later, Nick |

hand is the big thing.probably 3 weeks on it.ribs take friggin forever to heal, been, there done that before.just can't close my hand enough to grip the bars.as for the situation you saw,i would call the cops and the local aspc if you have one.people that do that to dogs need to be hung up by their nut sack.i locked more than a few up for that crap, which usually opened the door for other things, like drug charges, etc.thanks for the input. |
