I was wondering if anyone has removed the timing cover off there bike. The current setup has rivets on a horizontal plane like the Tube Frame bikes did, but I am curious if the XB also has bolt holes on a Vertical plane like the Tube Frame bikes do. If anyone can ansswer my question it would be greatly appreciated. I would look myself, but I don't have access to an XB. |

Koz, I would think its the same as the sportys. They have always been opposite of the big twins. Sporty timing cover

Mine fell off about a week ago, I'll go look. Rivit holes are at 3 and 9 o'clock. Two more holes around 2 and 8. Screw holes are about 11 and 5. |

11 and 5??? What's up with that? My M2 has the bolt holes at 12 and 6, I was hoping the XB was the same. I want to start making some aftermarket covers for the XB line. If anyone in the Milwaukee area is interested, I would love to look up close and personal at your bike! There would be some for of compensation for your time. Nothing to personal though, I am happily married... |

Koz, I believe the outter cover is riveted onto the inner cover like Roc says at 3 & 9, but the inner cover is held on by 2 screws that thread into the lockdowns for the timing adjuster. Not sure what the position of those are. Or at least thats how they used to be. Outter & inner covers. |

Could be, I just want to know for sure before I make a bunch of timing covers. I have had people asking for them. |

I have removed my timing cover. There are only two sets of holes horizontally. And the vertical holes are for the screws holding the plate that the outside timing cover screws into. If you can understand this. Little bit confusing to try and imagine. I will try drawing a diagram. |

Thanks... I think on my 2002 M2 I just screwed in the new cover plate in the Vertical holes. Maybe I should just buy an XB so I can do my research. Think my wife would go for that??? |

Koz, if the wife won't go for a new XB, Steve and I have access to a couple bikes you could look at. |

That would be great, are you free on Wednseday by chance? I would love to resolve my issue by Thursday morning so I can order parts while I am at the shop on Thursday. |

Mornings work great for me... What I am looking to do is pop a timing cover off and try to install a sporty cover. I have the cover and screws, but woud have to remove the cover you have. I have a rivet gun to reinstall your old cover. If this is OK by you let me know. Tuesday or Wednesday morning or Wednesday evening would work out great. It would also give us the chance to meet in person. My goal is to have items available for purchase by this summer when I start working some of the local bike shows. |

Tuesday or Wednesday morning would work great. Any time after 8AM and before 1PM. Don't need the rivet gun. No interest in keeping the stock cover. |

Usually 2 of the "bolt heads" are fakes. |

Bud, can I assume it was a simple bolt on? Scres on top and bottom? I am heading over to Chris_mackay's place tomorrow morning with some stuff to try out. |

So here is the final outcome. I went to Chris Mackay's place and looked at his bike. The bolt holes for the back plate are sure unough at 11 and 5 O'clock. We then stopped by Hals and I bought a stock backing plate. It has NO threaded holes and can only accept a rivited front coverplate. I will be tapping/treading that plate then using a cover plate on top of that with polished stainless bolts. Thanks to all who helped BUD, Did you drill holes at 12 and 6 on your plate? and if so is there room for a bolt to go past the backing plate 1/8" Chris, I should have checked (that (the above question) while I was over. |

I had the plate off and, yes, there would be room. But why? Unless you wanted to only have holes there. |

koz5150, yes drilled @ 6 and 12 and take the plate off before drilling, i used self tapping screws and made sure that the lower one was very short only just going trough the plate, cable for the ing. pickup is close by |

Just curious incase I wanted the holes Verticle instead of horizontal. It may be easier to Drill new holes since I would them be able to use the same patterns for Tuber and XB timing plates. |
