XB12_Ohio - You should have gone for a Drummer! There are gains down low, not losses..... Just funnin' with ya, enjoy the new sound.

Jersey your gains you speak of are true. But not on the 12 like on your 9.The Drummer helps some on the 12 but not a whole lot.

Congrats, I'm glad you like it. I really do too!! When you do ride it, you'll notice it sounds even better under load. My friend likened the sound to his 883 with shorties. The bottom end does lose a little, and I mean slight, but nothing like the Jardine. The good news is up top it likes to go!!! Or it's just tricking me cuz it's louder! LOL!

When I ride my wifes 9R with the Jardine, I damn near stall it every time pulling off due to loss down low. I did the same 2500-3K launch I do on mine and I pulled a LOUD wheel lifting launch. Wonderful.

Sorry guys... Change of heart there Rigga... I was gonna take some more pics today and post them tonight, but I got a little busy...

Here's the lowdown... I removed the packing and 2.25" perforated tube and replaced it with half the packing and much larger perforated tube...

Now the silencer becomes and expansion chamber... It's kind of like 2 stroke expansion chambers, I guess... Long and narrow for top end, short and fat for bottom end...

I was going to do dyno testing so I could make sure I wasn't going to send anyone down the wrong path, but after the last 3 days riding the bike there have been so many grins I just couldn't contain myself...

Here's the only pic I've got of the Jardine pulled down...

The perforated tube I put back in is the same profile as the outer can, just a little smaller...

Yeah... I'll still dyno it. I have to tune the TFi, but that will be ok, it's the curve you wanna see, not the numbers...

I can tell you there is a huge difference to the delivery, I'm not revving the tit's out of the bike all the time, instead of 4,000rpm - redline, I got 2,500rpm - redline to play with... Heaps better 'round town.

The note is deeper than the original Jardine note... My neighbour rides an R1 and he heard my playing around, came by and straight away siad '5h1t, that sounds heaps better'... Which was funny, cos I didn't dislike the sound of the Jardine...

It's a little louder. I didn't notice, but my wife reckons it is... But that could be placebo effect since she knew I was playing around with the exhaust...

It can be made quieter, you just need to use a perforated and packed front and rear panel to reduce the radiated volume through the endcaps...

The tube I used was actually out of an OEM Ducati 916 muffler I had laying about, it was the perfect length ahd cross section, but the next one will be made out of perforated stainless sheet with a front and rear welded on so i can pack both ends...

This was really only a test run to see what would happen... I didn't expect it to be this good out of the box...

I'll try and get a pic of the new perforated tube in the next few days, I have to build a mates computer tomorrow night and we are going riding on the weekend, so it might be next week...

I'm hoping someone else tries it and provides some feedback... It's totally retro fittable, all you gotta do is drill out the rivets and refit the original perforated tube... That's why I chose the Jardine to play with.

thanks i was just curious and if i wouldnt have asked im sure some one eles would have and i look forward to seeing the progress it really sounds like it may be a good fix to the problem every one was claiming about the jardine pipe which was the lack of low end which i have to admit was a turn off for me.

Brad,
I'll be interested in hearing how the canister holds up with this mod. Without the packing, the outer can sees much higher stresses, especially during high rpm operation and any popping that may occur. Customers that have lost their packing have had some problems with the rivet holes for holding on the end caps getting elongated, and in one case, literally tearing out the end of the tube. Keep us apprised.

I would have to agree with Al. My experience was with Vance & Hines pipes on my Interceptor back in the '80s. Pulled the packing out and it allowed the pipes (4into2) to resonate and vibrate more and was constantly blowing rivets. Like once a week I had to repair it. It was no fun.

Al & Odie...

It's still packed...

Mine won't stay like this exactly... This was an experiment to see what would happen when the effective volume of the can was increased... We did it this way because we had what we needed laying about in the workshop... One of thos 'no cost' modifications...

I have a couple of other ideas I want to play with, one in particular should proly work just as well as this, but should totally eliminate your concerns about the resonance destroying the can... But those ideas are untested as yet...

But I did replace the Jardine rivets with 3/16" blind rivets... They are much bigger and should improve reliability on that front.

My toss into the Exhaust ring...Ebay and $45 later (still packed in the original box unopened)

I still need to fabricate a front mount just for extra security, the rear mount is really solid and manages to PINCH the bolt in place so it can't back out. That there folks is the Vance and Hines SS2R for a Tuber : ) She sounds soooooo sweet. The bottom end seems to have picked up with a loss on the top end. She revs TOTALLY faster but now she seems to run out of breath just before the revlimiter hits. I still have to install a PCIII but the Race ECM on loan from OPTO "seems" to be doing fine. I have about 100 break in miles on her since the TPS reset this morning and I might ad the guys at the shop when I rolled up were QUITE impressed. I also have a bit of an exhaust leak where the headpipe goes into the canister. To get the exhaust to fit well I ended up cutting down the headpipe. Upon test fit it was very snug and didn't seem to be a leak potential, but it has. I think I am going to have the headpipe welded to the canister. The whole system is rather solidly mounted, very much like the stock exhaust. Money permitting, when I get the PCIII installed I will get some Dyno printouts as well.

The sound is different then the Jardine. It isn't as loud for shear "loudness" but the tone of the note has more Bark to it rather then a howl. IT is attention grabbing : )

I would like to thank AL at American Sport Bike for his in a rush phone advice when it came time to bid for the pipe.

I haven't forgot, just the weather hasn't been obliging and there isn't enough light/room in the garage to get good shots of the mount.

Holy crap! Just installed my race ECM, K&N filter (haven't modded the lid yet), and my D&D exhaust on my '04 XB12S. I wish you could see the grin on my face! The D&D website did not do justice to the sound this pipe makes - it's an aural assault from idle to redline, and just gets sweeter the more you nail it! I will definitely wear ear plugs when I commute.

At 1725 miles on the ODO, my bike is finally living up to it's looks!

Greetings, I installed my Jardine RT.1 on the weekend, had some issues with the OEM brackets, as they wouldn't come off, was an emergency trip to the Autostore for more tools.
I ended calling the HD dealership and ran it into the service dep't, they gave me the 100 questions to why are you removing the OEM bracket. Well they loosened up the bolts and then I decided to kill 2 birds with a single stone, booked in for the 4000km service.
Wait till they hear her when I take her in.
Picked up a 12 airbox, getting the rest of my mail package tomorrow when the post office opens, have a K&N and some other goodies..

BUT...

When I finally kicked er over...
Was 5pm Saturday afternoon...

Key on, power up, CLICK...
OH MY GOD !!!

Well the neighbourhood certainly knows..
If the barking dogs were driving them crazy, I solved the problem, just gave em something else to complain about (oh the dogs aren't mine, they are next door)...
Went for a 30 minute ride, up the highway, after many people just stood and looked and cars got out of my way...

Well the smile was hidden by the helmet, when I got home.. my girlfriend was standing on the balcony... shaking her head... First thing she said...
I can hear you.. That noise is loud...

Yeah, the XB had met it's true potential...
BRING IT ON...

I don't carry a garage door opener with me....my wife can hear me coming and opens it for me!

The other night I let a friend of mine take my bike for a spin. He rides a CR250 and was considering getting a street bike. He hadn't ridden my bike since my mods so I told him "Get after it!" Standing in his drive way, we could hear him a couple of blocks away! When he rolled up all he could say is "OH HELL YEAH! I've got to get me one of them!!" Almost brought a tear to my eye!

As you can see I mounted the bracket using the stock halfmoon as a brace, I plan on remaking the black bracket so it goes all the way around the stock halfmoon and has a reinforced plate that picks up the front bolt on the canister. AS it is right now, the whole thing is very solid. In the last pic you can see the use of the extension that is 2"IDx2"OD found at Autozone. 2 clamps hold it very snug. I did have to trim the bottom of the extension about 3/4" for a snug smooth fit. Yes that is JB Weldstick around the headpipe and the canister. I am trying to figure out if I can get away with welding it up or when I have the new headpipe fabricated/bent if I will have spring points done up. Right now the slip fit is a bit loose so the JB is helping to keep it tight and leak free. I still need to make a front mount, but there are no cracks in the JB weld at all with another 100 miles on the pipe since I put the JB on.
