OK guys,
One more newbie question for you. I heard from an owner of an '04 XB12S that removing the stock header pipes is a 4 hour job because the engine has to be dropped. Another guy with an '03 XB9S said he thinks that that might not be necessary on our bikes, but he weasn't sure. I'm thinking of getting the silver ceramic exhaust headers, but not if I'm gonna have to pay for 4 hours labor to drop the engine to do it! What's the real story?
Keep your knees in the breeze!

I was "studying" mine and the manual, and I think there may be a way to do it without "rotating" the motor, but have yet to try.

The front engie/mount triangle support. Remove all the obvious stuff, jack up/support the engine, remove the brace, and that should let you slide the pipe aft just enough to remove the pipe from the head. Of course getting the nuts off the rear studs will be tuff to, but anything is possible if you put some effort to it!!

Can anyone tell me if this is at all an option?

Bruce

Do a search with the nifty search feature. "removing XB Headers" or some such and you will find several threads that already discuss this topic. Just set it to search the Xboard and set it to search subject lines.

IF you run a search, you'll find at least a couple (even at least one recent) threads that discuss both ways of changing headers (change the plugs while you're there).

Pivotting the engine in the frame can be done much quicker than the XB manual suggests.......

Once you have removed the 3 engine tie bars, just loosen the swingarm bolt and undo the two front mounts for the oil cooler/front mount and loosen the rear one. There is no need to disconnect any cables/fuel pipes etc.
Put a jack under the front of the engine and undo the allen bolt on the front engine mount. You can then rotate the engine down using the jack, just far enough to take the headers off.

Sounds easy. I took my headers off by going through under the seat/shock/fan/o2 sensor and then the header bolts. What a pain. I think when i go to reinstall my headers i am going to attempt the way the stoobr2 is talking about. That way i can tighten the rear header bolts the right way and remove the old gasket.
