I was wondering if anyone had found any quality/decent looking airbox protectors/tank bras. I know Buell sells a silver airbox trim that looks pretty sharp, but I have the red xb12r with the amber trim. Does anybody know if there is an amber version. If not, what are people using that looks sharp and protects the bike from scratches? Mike | ||

Well, Buell has a black tank bra. There are some generic carbon fiber type protectors. I'm actually looking around right now as well for a something similar to the Buell aluminum protector but smaller and in carbon fiber. | ||

I got the silver one for mine and it looks very good on the bike. Saved the airbox cover quite well. | ||

I have the silver one as well. Works great and looks great. If your looking for carbon fiber check out american sportbike they have carbon fiber tank/airbox protectors. | ||

There is a 3M clear adhesive film sheet product which you can cut any shape you want, and cover any area you want. Just cut to shape, peel one corner of the protective paper away from plastic film, spray a foam window cleaner on the part of the bike you are attaching the film to, peel the remainder of the protective paper off and line up the film where you want it, and use a soft rubber squeegee, pushing from the centre of the sheet out to fix to the bike. Get out all the air bubbles with the squeegee and wipe off the excess window cleaner and you are done. Piece of cake. I have it on the "tank" and where my knees touch on the frame, and at the front of the tank where the tankbag mounting straps/clips dangle. | ||

The stuff works better than you'd think for no "glue", but still will bubble & peal up after a while. You can reapply the same piece if kept clean. Looks like a wet/clear coat when applied. Marketed under different names the stuff I got was called Snider's Paintgard. A number of independant M/C shops around here carries it so a few phone calls will likely get you to it Blake. I've been looking for a black plastic tank protector that peals right on & off for waxing & cleaning. Only seen one but it was nice & he couldn't remember where he got it. | ||

Here in Canada, you most often find the film in auto repair supply shops (they usually sell it with the little rubber squeegee), but you have to buy the whole roll. Unibear...If the stuff you are using bubbles and/or peels, it is NOT the same stuff. I've been using this film on every bike I ever owned (including my KLR)and it NEVER bubbles or peels. | ||

Sniders Paint guard is not the same stuff as the adhesive mounted stuff. Sniders paint guard is non-adhesive stuff, good for temporary application for like when you're using a tank bag or saddle bags and you want to protect the paint during that use, but then peel it off when you aren't using it. We sell it, but I haven't done a good job of advertising it. The adhesive mount super tough stuff (teflon, I think) is something I'm still looking for a good source for. There are a lot of adhesive mounted films at Mcmaster Carr here, but I think the stuff I'm looking for is clear teflon, and that isn't listed here. I'd sure like to find a good source. Al |
