So you are saying US Navy guys like painting things, hun??? Yes, it is plasti-kote's Kameleon Kolor.... I know, I know, damn rattle cans. I have had good luck with this stuff on other plastics so I thought I would give it a try. If it flakes and peals, it just gives me another reason to get carbon fiber ones. |

I've had good luck with Plastikote as well. It shouldn't peel... Now you've got my gears a turnin. I'll refresh my white XB with black dye and make it smoke. Then next year I'll Plastikote it. I'll always have a new bike! |

Used the same stuff on my other bike - even though I clear coated, petrol still destroyed it. You using petrol resistant clear? |

charlie, You won't get smoke color from black dye. I tried it Thursday night and got a purplish-plum color. I used a ton of black rit dye and the dye isn't actually black, it's purple. |

Thanks for the warning Moboy. Good thing my favorite color is Purple. Wanna trade plastics? Got any pics? Please post so I can see if I like it... |

I hadn't thought of the fuel problem.... I will check into a clearcoat that will not react with the Plastikote clear. I don't usually get fuel on the bike when I fill it up, but it may happen someday.

I haven't put them back on yet, but I will try to snap some tonight and post them. It actually looks alright, but just not the look I was going for. It is definitely different than any Buell I have seen though. |

Learning how to use your new digital camera:-) Good guess, but I have had the camera for a few years now. I am actually seeing what I can mess up on my bike. |

I do TOO. As soon as I get some sunshine I will get pics. I tried to get some pics outside today, but there was not enough natural light and with the flash it just doesn't look quite the same as it does in person. In person it does look even better than the last picture. |

I used to used Plasti-Kote on my dirt bike tanks in the '70's. I don't recall any problems with gasoline dissolving the paint after if was cured, but that was with the old leaded fuels. You might try a sample test. BTW: I love Candy Apple paints! xbolt12 |

Curious Question, was one kit enough for the whole bike? |
Cdrlmr
| Posted on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 02:38 pm: |
|
One kit would have been enough to do the bike yes, BUT I had some left over from another project so I needed to buy a second one. The Plastikote is sold each can seperately. Duplicolor's kit is all 3 cans in one box. With Plastikote, I might suggest a second can of clear so you get a really nice gloss. |

Just how much did it cost for you to paint those? |

Just how much did it cost for you to paint those? About $20 That would cover the base coat, the color coat, the clear coat and a scotch brite pad to "degloss" the surface so the paint will stick.} |

Only $20? How? |

The base coat is like $4.99, the color is like $8.99, and clear about $3.99, that adds up to $17.97. I just rounded up. The base coat might be a little more also. Remember these are spray cans. |

I did my helmet with that stuff last summer. Even with two cans of clear it still dulled n looked like after the first long ride. I'd DEFENITLY try to use some automotive type clear on it if you want it to stay all sexy. EDIT: This is the lid I did. Like you said its impossible to get a good pic of this stuff and even this looks better in the sun. But you get the idea (Message edited by buelltroll on January 29, 2005) |

Hey Cdrlmr are those third eye bar end mirrors on your bike? Yes, I believe that was the name of them. They are really CHEAP. The glass in one of them cracked when I was trying to put them in. The rubber is a touch big, so you need to lube them to get them in. I just have a hard time justifying $85 for CRG ones. I am sure they are worth it, but that is a lot of money for mirrors. Cataract2: I believe if you use the normal automotive color change paint it is VERY EXPENSIVE. These spray products have been out for a while now. It is expensive compared to other spray paints though. Buelltroll Did you use the Plastikote or Duplicolor? Also did you wax it after it cured? I let it cure then I put two coats of wax on it. I might break down and get some automotive clear to put over it. I am just worried that they will not be compatable. I have use different types of clears and paints and they were not compatable and would cause the paint to lift and peel. I will do some research about a compatable clear that will not dull though. Thanks } |

Posted on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 05:56 pm: after you use the plastickote use auto clear...that should work Auto clear will run you about 50 bucks...best to bring it to a body shop ...when they are shooting a car or something them can probably shoot the plastic for a few bucks and you get the pro behind the gun IMHO |
