Ok i have taken off my chin fairing. And i am looking to loosen the rear axle pinch bolt on the underside of the swingarm. now my question is where is it? is it the bolt on the left side of the swingarm above the exhaust port? If so what type of tool is this rear axle removal tool? Do I need to buy one? Thanks for clearing this stuff up for me.

The rear axle pinch bolt is on the right hand side of the swingarm, way back by the axle.
Takes an allen wrench to loosen or tighten.
Why are you taking that off to remove the exhaust?
If you are taking the wheel off there should be a nut in your toolkit. Looks like 2 nuts welded together.

You don't need to take the wheel off to remove the exhaust.I know it says so but you don't.

Ok i was just following the directions and it said it would loosen the tension on the belt to make pulling the pipe off easier. so i'll scrap that idea.

my main reason for taking off my exhaust is to get to my headers and take them off. but i have another question i want go the route were you take the shock, fan and o2 sensor out. but wouldnt i need to leave the exhaust on there in order to jack up the bike to undo the shock? I was told to take the exhaust off first but it just doesnt make any sense to me.

I also wanted to take off my race pipe and paint it. I read the same thing, that the belt had to be loosened to remove the pipe. Is it possible to remove the pipe with the belt still tight and on the bike? If so, I think I will go ahead and get that done soon. If anyone has done it please tell me how. Thanks everyone.

It possible to take off the exhaust without loosening the rear wheel. It just is a bit of a pain to get straps loose because they are hard to get to with the tensioner in place. If you have the proper tools, 1/4 inch drive extensions and such its not that big of a deal.

I remember when I did my exhaust I had to loosen the rear tire so I could remove the idler pulley to get to the nuts on the exhaust bands that hold the pipe on in the rear. I remember trying like hell to bypass that step and just sneak the socket in past the pulley but I think I ended up removing it.

yeah it is easier to take the pipe off with the idler pully off but all you have to do is just spin the tire so the holes idler pully line up with the bolts then you can put the socket right in the hole and losen the strap.

i was able to get the exhaust off by just puttin a 1/4 inch extension on my drill with the proper socket an reach through the belt tensioner. take off and replacement took about 15 minutes

Ok, I know i can get my pipe off now. But should I keep my pipe on in order to jack up the bike to undo the shock. (I'm still trying to take my headers off)

Use tie down straps, or a come-along, and hang the bike from the frame. If you have an engine lift, use that. I use the rafters in the garage. You can even use a ladder, that's what some of the tuber guys use.

Good idea. I'll give it a try. Now you just lifted up the rear of the bike not the whole thing, Correct? Rough estimate, how high should you lift it?

I lift the whole bike. I only lift it just high enough to get the job done.

I assume you guys have two straps on the rear bracket holding the pipe on, correct? I can get the back bolt off the strap through the idler pulley, but the other bolt is right behind the idler bracket. I am not able to even get a wrench on it when I take the back strap off. I don't see how I will be able to take the straps off without taking the idler pulley off. Did anyone else have this problem? Thanks again.

The idle pulley is no big deal, it's way easier to just pull it off, than to try and go round it.

If you are removing the rear shock, I would remove the belt to keep from putting strain on it. (dont know if the manual says anything about it, but sounds like a good idea to me) Do you have a service manual? Will be very worth it!

Thanks for the info. It makes sense. I will be sure to remove the belt. It cant hurt anything. I do have a service manual but its in the mail right now.

I ended up pulling my idler pulley off. I couldnt get to the other nut. It was much easier after i pulled the idler pulley off. Not that big of a deal.

I don't have the axle removal tool. That is why I was trying to do it without removing the pulley. I will definitely need to get the tool kit from my dealer. Better yet, what is your price on those, Dave? Thanks.

I might stand corrected on this but I'm sure you can loosen the back axle to release tension on the belt to remove the idler pulley without jacking the bike i.e. with the bike resting on the sidestand. I know I did it at least once or twice to change mufflers. This would help you Deuceman but not Lpd22 who will still have to support the rear of the bike somehow without the rear shock. No need to remove the belt. I am also one of them that finds it easier to remove the idler pulley, you can clean it and check the bearings while it's off and you can re-install the 2 rear muffler clamps with much greater access. Sometimes the long way is the short way.

The "tool" is two nuts stuck together, one to go in the axle, the other to put a wrench on. By all means get the tool kit, but you can probably have the right parts from your local hardware store if you get a bolt and nut of the right size.

I forget the size though, so measure first.

The view is deceiving, I needed to put a 2x4 across the center where the bars are bowing INWARD not downward. When I put it together next time, I will put a sheet of 3/4" plywood at the bottom of the framework with casters so I can wheel it around the shop.

If you plan to need to remove the muffler again, you can put the muffler clamps back on in the opposite direction, so that you can get to the clamp bolts from the other side of the bike. That way you don't have to mess with the belt tension at all.

I loosened the shock to the plushes setting. still not sure if i should undo the top first or the bottom.
