Ok, I was wondering what oil filters will fit the XB? Does anyone know if the Mobil 1 ones will fit, STP ones, K&N ones, heck even the Wal Mart ones. If anyone knows please post up to help or if there's a link on a Buell site for this info. | ||

All of thee above offer filters for the XB. The Walmart filter you do need to be careful of. SOME* of them are supplied by Fram. Otherwise the Walmart ones are the same as the factory oilfilter. (*SOME that is based on Keith taking his Walmart filter apart and it being like the factory, and me taking my first walmart filter apart and having it be like the fram. A few others have had the same results as Keith.) | ||

Bosch 3311 Mobil 1 M1-103 K&N HP 100B STP 4967 AC Delco UPF 1233 Wal-Mart also carries one for $1.97, but it's the only filter I have ever accidentally crushed with a filter wrench, so I won't use that one again. I'm currently using the STP filter from AutoZone. It was less than $4 | ||

what would lead one to trust the functionality of a $1.97 oil filter? would you shop for tires or brake rotor bolts at walmart? what if you were offered dot 4 brake fluid in a discount store branded bottle for 69 cents? would you run it in your motorcycle? | ||

Just one for the board. What is wrong with the Fram oil filers? Any problems? I plan on using them do to no other filters are in Germany unless I go to the dealer and pay a arm/leg for a Buell oil filter. | ||

I'd use the Buell filter. Unless you ride about 50,000 miles per year, the difference in price won't amount to much per year. Let's just use a rider that puts on 10,000 miles per year. Even if you change your oil every 2000 miles, that's 5 filters per year. 3.00 difference in price between good quality other brand filter. 15.00 per year. If you follow the service intervals of every 5000(I don't) that's only 6.00 per year difference. If you ride your Buell 5000 miles per year, that's 6.00 or so per year difference Just thought I'd point that out. Some make it sound like you're going to save 1000s of dollars! I understand if you don't have a local dealer and things like that. Dave I sell Buell filters for 6.26 | ||

The Fram oil filter uses a "Celluloid" aka cardboard endcap at the bottom portion of the filter that has shown itself to come apart while in service and block oil lines and galleys. | ||

The K & N filter is HP-1003 and their web site now references a KN-177 for the XB series. The HP-1003 number cross references to the Fram number and Mobil number. | ||

chainsaw beware that walmart MAY have ONCE used the particular vendor referenced as oem, but that does NOT mean that the disount filter was built to the same specification, nor that it had anything remotely resembling a quality control program associated. also you should be aware that walmart can change suppliers as quick as you or i change our underwear. if they sell for $1.97 there is not real likely to be a great reserve of quality built in to the product. | ||

I won't tell ya which filter you use cause it's your call but me personally; I wouldn't use cheap products on my bike no more than I would buy cheap dog food for my furry not so little bundle of joy who I hope one day wakes up and realizes that he is indeed a dog. The extra cost of good high quality proven filters is worth it in my oppinion. It's kinda like "you are what you eat". A bike is only as good as the sum of it's parts. | ||

I looked at a couple wal marts here in Ohio, and the wal mart labelled filters I saw looked *identical* to fram filters, and did not appear as well made as stock. I got some aftermarket purelator (pure-one) filters just to have on the shelf in a pinch, but in general I try and buy the buell part, just as an excuse to drop by my dealer and say "hi". Premium non buell filters are not that much cheaper then the Buell part. | ||

Well I just put a CarQuest filter on my XB12 and noticed a slight leak coming from the oil cooler connection just in front of the filter. Don't know what caused it yet... | ||

That's sort of normal. Reinstall the line with fresh teflon tape. | ||

I just got a lot of Buell stock filters in a dealer buyout. So, here's a badweb special. Order 9029 here, mention badweb in the comments section of the order form, and I'll sell them for $5.00 each. Limit 4 per person. I got a bunch of other brand spankin new XB parts that I normally wouldn't stock (XB R high and low bean headlight assemblies, front brake master cylinder, voltage regulator, black chin spoiler center, stock air filters, lots of other stuff). I'm with Dave on this. What you save isn't worth what you may have happen to your baby. I buy 2 or 3 Buell filters at a time at the dealer and keep the receipts in my "Warranty/Maintenance" binder so if I ever need proof, as the owners manual says, of all of my owner performed maintenance it is in one, handy location. Al, Dang! Now I really have to order some stuff from you! I've been writing down part numbers that I need/want from you but now with this dealer buy out and a good deal on filters I'm gonna have to do it sooner than later. Warranty can't be voided simply because a different brand of oil filter is used. There have been many discussion on this board about this topic. | ||

I understand that but it is one less, cheaply prevented issue I might have with the dealer. Plus I think white filters look like @55.... | ||

Your leak looks a bit more severe than mine. Many people reported leaks at the oil cooler fittings. I had those leaks and similar leaks on both feed line fittings near the oil filter. When I did my first oil change I reinstalled all the fittings with fresh teflon tape and I have nearly 9000 leak free miles. Make sure you use a flare wrench so you don't damage the fittings. | ||

How did you remove the oil filter? By turning it anti-clockwise. If it won't come off just using you hand, use a soft, band wrench, a small one. Shouldn't be on there too tight. | ||
