I "think" I remember reading something about a 6 speed or taller gear mod that someone had done to the XB. Does anyone have the link back to it if it exists?
Thanks

You can change the primary ratio, or go to a chain drive for the secondary. No 6 for the XB...

Thanks Don. That may have been what I read. I had thought it was something like "twist" gears though. Does that sound familiar?

Well, it would theoretically be possible to put a six speed in an XB, but the cases would have to be split or a trap door machined. It of course would have to be machined specifically for an XB case too, the older tube frame six speeds wouldn't work. "twist" doesn't ring a bell.

There was a rumour of a 6 speed being made but the source for that unit has since dropped from sight. One of the race teams suppossedly has added a trapdoor to the XBcase where it would be on a Tuber case and has suppossedly adapted a Baker6 to work. But I have neither seen pictures nor heard anymore about it.

Yeah, more rumours and hearsay...

I put a chain drive on mine, the final drive is 5% taller than before, it's got about all the extra legs you'll want with stock internals...

The extra efficiency of the chain has broken even with the taller ratio, but now I've extra legs (hold the centipede jokes) in each gear...

BTW, we have 5h1te roads, with heaps of debry and I snapped my first belt at 6200k's, so I had good reason to go to chain.

Very interesting. If only the XB had the casette tranny. That is pretty expensive too, but I guess not bad if you compared to a complete stock transmission.
Thanks for the link!

Pictures of a trap door modified XB engine have been posted on the site here in the past. At least one shop doing it on a limited (not usually available to the general public) basis is being talked about in at least two threads today.

It can be done with the right resources and contacts and machinist. Trap door tranny or buy a tube frame bike for a second bike, the cost is comparable. $$$

Twist Gear

I don't know if this will work on our bikes though.
I remember something about this last summer or the summer before.

Thanks Glitch. That was the exact company that I was thinking about. It seems somewhere I read about the gear set working on the XB. Maybe I'll just drop them an email and see if they have ever tried it.

I suspect it can be fitted to the XB gearbox without much difficulty. Whether or not it's a good thing though is less clear to me. What it does is shorten 1st through 4th, making a big jump to 5th which remains 1:1. They suggest you couple it with a taller final drive, effectively moving 1st through 4th back to about where they were but making 5th taller.

A lot of 4-speeds were made with a gearbox like that, set up with a huge jump from 3rd to 4th. It sucked to make that gear shift and have the motor fall out of the powerband. Andrews made gear sets to fix it. Ironic that now we have nice evenly spaced 5-speeds and someone's selling a kit to switch it back.

Fitting the Baker 6 to the XB looks hard to me. Besides just the trap door arrangement, the shifter arrangement is totally different (the XB is dual-rail and the cases are cast and machined to accomodate it). There would be a lot of welding up and machining involved. But anything can be done with enough effort I suppose.

The only person who ever claimed there were 6 speed XB's was Corey "hamster garage" James.

Claimed his bike was setup with one & now we all know how full of it he is/was.
