I was out riding this weekend and experienced a whine kind of like a blower coming from the trans, when after 30 miles it let go, luckily it didn’t lock up just went from powering up a hill in 3rd or 4th to nothing... cant shift it, it just acts like its in neutral? Is there anyone that has this problem or more important, knows what transmissions from Harleys will fit, I am afraid it a total loss, but haven’t been able to disassemble until later this week?

Thanks Dave W

My tranny went bad also, luckily it was fixed under warranty.I have heard a few other ppl on other boards that have had tranny problems.Bad news is you will have to split the cases, and no other tranny will work.

Dave, there are a few failure modes in there that would not require the case split / tranny rebuild, so don't loose hope yet.

Pull the inspection cover for the primary chain and see if its still under tension. With the primary chain snapped, the trans will act just like its in nuetral no matter what gear the bike is in since it is no longer connected to the motor. If its still under tension, and you can actually move the shift lever and hear it engage each gear, but it still rolls around then I would say its in need of a case splitting.

The gear selector mechanism can fail when one of the small return springs becomes detached. This normally manifests itself by being able to change up but not down. This is accessible by removing the clutch drum and is easy to spot. Anything more than this and its an engine strip job unfortunately: (

Its the fact he says it acts like its in nuetral that makes me think it isn't that Trojan.

Aztec, there isn't one available for consumers yet.

Tojan, that gear selector mechanism would be known as the "detent plate". Had the clip pop off my S3 and I couldn't change gears. It did not act like it was in neutral, but there might be a case were it could.

Thinking more about this, it does not make sense.

The 5th gear drive assembly could explain the scary noises, but when that thing fails, I would expect the tranny to be locked into gear.

I don't think there are any places (besides neutral) where the bike could be in a false neutral, and it is hard to imagine any of those gears stripped, much less having them stripped and not siezed.

Somebody here had an XB with an improperly torqued bolt (accessible through the primary cover) that caused some kind of failure, but I can't remember his symptom. He found it after pulling the engine, and it turned out he did not have to split the cases.

If it happend while he was in neutral, and it just got left there, I could see the shifter pawl assembly having failed somehow, stranding him in neutral.

It seems like the clutch could have failed somehow, but I would expect that to fail engaged, not disengaged.

A failing primary chain would again seem to fall in the catagory of "that ain't gonna happen without some spectacularly scary noises".

Maybe the splines on the crank or the counter shaft, but again, it seems like that would give a LOT of notice before failing.

Let us know, I am curious.

Hey Wickedflesh, Did you say that the Baker Six speed for Buell is not out on the market yet? I have been looking at the six speed option for some time now. For 2000 bones I will have to keep saving my pennies tho. Brad
