I'm finally getting to the point of buying an XB9R, a "new old stock" 03 (yes, I know about all the improvements on the later ones, but money's tight and I can get a pretty good deal). One problem--the one I'm looking at has plastic peeling from the front fender--the dealer says the price is with the front fender as is. My options are, in order of preference: get the dealer to replace it without raising the price; buy a replacement fender myself; ride the bike as it is.

My question is, if one plastic component is peeling, does that mean all the other plastic bodywork on the bike is gonna peel too? Is there any way to repair the peeling, or prevent it from occurring? Is this a warranty issue? Is white bodywork still available?

Thanks for any info (now I'll go check the knowledge vault).

If you feel the price is right, buy the bike. the plastic parts are real inexpensive and you'll love the XB9R.

Never heard of it. Replacement fenders should be easy as can be, and I don't think they are expensive.

I don't know if I would plan on a lot of support from that dealer though. Unless you are getting a *smoking* good deal ($6k or under), it seems a dealership with any level of self respect and pride would have just replaced that fender a long time ago. IMHO.

Are the fenders the same color molded in plastic as the airbox? You might be able to repair it with some elbow grease.

geoff,

my white 03 9r hasn't had that issue, nor have i heard of that even happening. I really don't see how the plastic can 'peel'. you might be able to lightly sand it off, and there are always used body parts floating on ebay. Buy the bike, you'll love it.

I had some plastic peel on my white 9R after some aggressive hosing with a power washer. I concentrated the water stream too narrow at one point and caused the plastic to peel in a couple of spots, like string cheese. It is possible with a lot of feather sanding and rubbing compound to minimize the damage and shine it up, but I don't think it's possible to completely "heal" the plastic.

Buy it, you can always replace the plastic. Like Aldaytona said. It is relatively inexpensive and they are on Ebay on a regular basis.

My bike was Yellow when I bought it.

I've seen the plastic peel on three bikes now. It can be fixed though. Fine sandpaper (like 800 grit), wet sanding laterally with the peel. If you go over the peel, it will get worse, ask me how I know... Anyway, it can be done...

Two of the three I've seen were victims of pressure washing, and others chimed in with similar problems when I posted. Surlin seems to be very prone to this.

Geoffg, get the bike if it's a good deal. I know you've been wanting a 9R for quite some time. My white 9R had some small plastic peels but it's not that big of a deal. I don't expect a used bike to be perfect and thats a pretty minor issue if it's in good shape mechanically. I've ridden the CityX and newer Buells but I still love my '03 9R, it's as good as any.

Good luck!

Mine is pealing in several places as well. For now, I'm not going to worry about it toomuch. Down the road I may start to replace stuff with carbon fiber.
