the other idler thread got a bit sidetracked, so here is mine: if you ride in the rain a lot, you will likely have the idler pulley bearings fill with water, and then seize (replaced mine twice). the bearings are actually very easy to replace. gently (eye protection) remove the internal snapring, press out (two) 6203 sealed bearings, press in a fresh pair, reinstall snap ring. takes a few minutes. warning USE GOOD QUALITY BEARINGS. good quality bearings have names like KOYO, NSK, NTN, Fafnir, SKB. good quality bearings are NOT made in china, korea, poland, hungary, turkey, nor india. this is not personal prejudice, i install several hundreds of bearings per year in customer's equipment, and when they fail i get the equipment back to fix. i use the best parts available at any price in my business, and i suggest you do the same, when it comes to the sealed cartridge bearings on your bike, get only the best. good luck, dean |

And Fullpower what do you say to this statement? idler pulley is supposed to be replaced with the belt at 15K on the 03 XB's. Are they talking about the bearing or the hole idler pully? thanks

big hd, yes, changing belt is pretty easy. i did it roadside, with basic handtools: allen wrenches, 8 inch crescent for axle tool. a 9/16 box end wrench was also useful to access the idler pulley assembley nuts, and of course the always handy T-27 for the plastic. |

Ain't this warranty-able item though? Yes, it is, if it broke. No, it's not, if it's worn out. Make sense? |

ok take a shot at three questions here: 1) my belt did not last 15000, it broke at 6700 miles. 2) according to harley the idler pulley assembley is serviced as a complete unit. they do not sell the bearings or pulley seperately. 3) yes, harley did replace under warantee my broken belt, and after reinstalling the seized bearings in my idler, they waranteed the idler assy also. 4) and a bonus: want bearings? look in the yellow pages, under bearings. you will find a bearing supply house somewhere nearby. if you buy in pairs, expect to pay about 8 or 9 bucks apiece. i buy in hundred lots at a ridiculous discount.i install over a thousand bearings a year, so have a pretty good feel for their qualities. |
