Does the pointer move when you turn the ignition on? If it does itīs probably the pick up in the gearbox thatīs broken. A common failure on sportster and Buell iīve heard. Easy to replace, only one or two screws.

To remove the speedo sensor for replacement only requires you to unplug one connector and unscrew one screw, then reverse with the new part.

The 2003 XB9S should not have the (very common) blown speedo sensor problem. The 03 XB9R's will however. I think it was fixed for all the 04's and up.

That's not to say your speedo sensor is not blown, it just didn't happen the same way everyone elses did.

Look for a loose connector for the sensor assembly, pinched / frayed / cut wires, or a bunch of garbage stuck onto the sensor (it is magnetic). Try wiping it off and reinstalling.

The sensor is located on the right side and top of the gearbox. It counts the teeth on the fifth gear and sends the signal to the speedometer. Does anyone know if itīs possible to measure the sensor to see if itīs broken?

You can also try pulling it out and cleaning it since it is in a sense a magnetic pickup. I know of 3 now that have done that and had it work perfect after, and one case where it was actually blown. Thats 3 9s and 1 9r, can you figure out which was blown : )

Mine on the blast just needed cleaning @ 5,000 miles, works like a charm ever since.

Mine packed up on my 03 9R at around 3000 miles...no speedo or odometer. I got the sensor replaced as a warranty issue without any problem. Has been fine since.

Fixed. After inspecting it and then cleaning it no luck. So I went to the dealer and for 73E or $98.00 ouch. It is fixed and I thank you all for input. Great site is a under statement.

Most likely the speed sensor like everyone else said, I had the same thing happen to my 03 Road King over the summer.
