xb9er, I swiss cheesed my xb12s awhile ago and I really wasnt pleased with the results. After seeing your pic I decided to go all the way and remove the top of the air box with good advice from odie. Then I did the exact same as in your pic. WOW what a kick ride! I dont know if it is the 50 degree weather here (new orleans) or what but man she pulls hard! It took me about 2 solid hours with my Dremel and a pair of needle nose to grab the excess plastic. All said and done, really wasnt that hard if you take your time and use the sandpaper you mentioned. I still need to buy the steel mesh though. Anyways thanks for the great idea and to odie for help with the airbox. I was going to add the techlision but I love the way it runs and pulls now so I think I will leave it as is. Thanks again! Bigeasy: Imagine what she'll pull like if you have the Techlusion! More air + more fuel = BIGGER grins! You seriously should consider the TFI. It kicks . Chris |

Only question I have, and this has been on my mind since I seen Hogs mods(lol), is what about getting caught in a thunderstorm? I don't intend on riding in the rain, but sometimes being a hundred or so miles from home doesn't give me a choice. Wondering what ill effects these mods would have. I really do like both mods, they look lean and mean, adds more mystery and appeal to the "BUELL" thing. |

My sportster had an open airfilter behind a hamcan. Pretty much the same as some of the older tubers have. I've been riding that thing in HEAVY rain, and it was only once it was running a little rough. These engines don't seem to be bothered much by it. I'm not sure, but only Hogs will be able to tell. If he doesn't have a problem, none of us will |

Nice job on the mods you two, I may try the up front holes next year....I don't trust my (un)steady hands with the side vents like Hogs did but that looks very trick! If you're worried about rain, keep a small amount of duct tape rolled up on a golf pencil in your under your seat storage. That can be your rain proof airbox sealant if needed. Of course then you'll need some goo-gone to clean it off the next day. |

I don't think water is a big deal at all. I've ridden my Buell race oval equipped S3 in torrential downpours and that air filter is pretty much hanging out in the open, nary a cough. In fact, after my wreck up on Mt Evans at the Colorado Buell gathering in 2001, I'd scraped half my air filter off the bike, and then afterwards rode back to Breckenridge thru the heaviest rain I've ever ridden in (complete with mudslides, filled my tankbag to the brim with water literally in minutes), and the bike ran just fine with no ill effects. For the water to be ingested thru the XB induction system, it has to get thru the air filter and down the velocity stack...I doubt much gets there as much of anything more than a mist. I'd frankly be more worried about it being parked in pouring rain than riding in it. I would, however, go to the back right corner of the lower airbox and drill a small weep hole there just to keep the airbox from partially filling with water. YMMV, but I wouldn't be sweating it.
