Just wondering if anyone has ever painted there headers with some high temp spray paint. Mine are changing all different colors and I want to paint them black or silver. I saw a pic of wardogs bike and he had them wrapped with black exhaust tape and it look real good. I want to know if the paint holds up or starts to chip away after a couple hundred miles. I have time to take them off and paint them but do not feel like sending them away to get coated. |

No paint will hold up to those headers not even for a hour close to the heads.Your pipes can be cleaned up with some medal polish or have them ceramic coated black or silver. |

These are Jet-Hot coated "sterling". $117 to get it done. Removing/reinstalling the headers is not a joy.

The only problem with getting them coated is taking them off. Don't you have to rotate the motor to do this. Has anyone on here rotated there motor?? If so how hard is it????????? Chad |

there's several threads that have covered the pipe removal, and most state they don't have to rotate the engine, but remove the rear shock and fan instead..... |

I didn't rotate the motor, but it is a real pain in the job to get the lower rear header nut on and off. Plus you really can't get a torque wrench properly on the rear nuts to set them exactly right. I used a 1/4" drive set with a "u" joint which isn't good even if you have a good "mechanics feel". Forget about replacing the rear exhaust seal without rotating the motor. I am pretty anal about doing motor work "perfectly" (comes from my old enduro days) and I wasn't happy with the job I did. If I did it again, I'd probably rotate the motor and do it right. BTW, so far everything is fine. |

Can you wrap the pipes with tape, and have it look good with out removing them? |

Yes you can. That's what I did to cover a nasty road rash on my pipe when I crashed.

Hey Marc, I was beginning to wonder if someone was going to ask about that old thing in the background. It is a 1949 H-D WL 45 c.i.d. Flathead. I'm going to chop it old school and to my taste. A whole lot of black with some chrome. |

They make stainless steel straps to hold down the wrap. Cleaner looking, not as wide as hose clamps and no screw. Looks nice. I rotated the motor down. It must have been a pain in the @ss the other way. Sweet looking R. Did you coat the wrap with heat resistant paint? The stuff I got suggests that to help keep moisture out. |

You are correct as far as the stainless steel straps are concerned. It is a cleaner look compared to the hose clamp, but I was in a pinch. As the say - "improvise, adapt, overcome". It was a total pain in the arse wrapping the pipes while still attached to the bike. I won't do that again! Yes, I coated the wrap with black high temp silicone coating as best I could. |

Believe me, I'm not knocking you for using hose clamps. Man, I can't imagine what a pain it was to do with the pipe ON the bike. More power to you. I think it looks great. It most certainly can't hurt either. The faster the exhaust leaves the better! |

The boys are right, the high temp paint won't hold up... I painted mine to get an idea of what they'd look like black because I didn't like the pollished ceramic look... I'm glad I did, the black looks great... Just have to ceramic coat them now, although wardog's got me thinking about taping them up... You can see the latest pic on my profile, the bike's dirty, but you get the idea... |

Trench - If I remember correctly, Jet-Hot has a black too. It cost a little more. One of the Badwebbers had it done and posted a pic. It looked pretty good. |

Yeah Jersey, I know... But I have to send the headers away and pay about $170ish AUD for something I wasn't sure about... I hadn't seen a pic of a set on a bike, only the headers on their own. I only painted them to get a 'preview', if you like, of what they'd look like on the bike Black... BTW, IIRC the JetHot stuff is ceramic coating, too, so we are talking about the same thing... |
