Not looking to get into a stock vs. aftermarket debate. I'm trying to keep the stock muffle on my XB12. A couple of years ago, I had it ceramic coated to keep the rust at bay. Since it was starting to show a little corrosion, I had just had it redone. I should have taken a picture before completely disassembling to tickle the memory. But putting it back together today, I wasn't sure about the spring routing. The manual isn't clear on the attachment points, just the orientation of the coiled portion. Does this look correct?
Second, apparently they use some ceramic medium to polish it after the baking. I pulled a couple of little balls trapped in the valve mechanism. But I SEEM to recall that it kinda snapped back? It doesn't now. Is my memory correct? It actually feels like it has 'steps' in the rotation and will hold there. |

Spring looks good, I think it’s just for anti rattle but not sure. Since the actuator only uses a pull cable the valve should be able to return smoothly on it’s own. Maybe hold it upside down and exercise the valve a few times to clear it? |

Yes the spring is just there to prevent rattling noise, and is installed right. I would add a dab of antiseize on the ends of the spring. |

So this ceramic coat is good only for 2 years? |

12 years since it was first done. Too literal... |

Hadn't thought about upside down. Heading out to try that. Have a bore scope on the way to look in there. Re: the ceramic coating: I did it originally as I said in the hopes of adding longevity. Mission accomplished, this is a 2004 XB12R. I don't know how thick it is, but the stamped 'jack point' is as clean as if it was done yesterday. |

Turned it upside down and 90 degrees either way. No joy. Started having thoughts that maybe some of the ceramic coating got in the pivot surfaces. So pulled out some fine white silica sand and flooded the area while working it back and forth with a wrench. Apparently, one of the little ceramic beads they use to polish it was small enough to get in there. The sand ground it down enough to let it pop out. All is good, still need to put the sprocket cover and chin fairing back on and it's ready for new shoes and spring to get here. |
