I'm using Denso iridium IXU24 plugs for the front and rear cylinders. I've noticed that the rear spark plug is running hotter (based on the color difference). 24 seems to be the right temperature for the front, but not for the rear. I'm wondering if I'll run into any problem if a colder rear spark plug (IXU27) is used, while using the same (IXU24) front plug. | ||

interesting idea. what are you paying for those plugs? i was quoted 11 bucks and change for EACH ONE. is that ridiculous? or are these precious metals really worth their weight in gold? i have had pretty good service from my 10R12A's so far, and they are only about 5 bucks the pair. | ||

I paid $11.99 each (retails for $15.68). They are well made - suppose to outlast the engine. | ||

I guess depends on how long the plug would last. If the $12 plugs would last twin as long as the $5 plugs, I would go with the $12 any day. I'm interested in the different heat range plug usage as well... | ||

I just pulled my plugs on my 2004 xb12r. The bike has 800 total miles on it. The front plug looks a little rich and the back one look lean.  | ||

You guys do understand that you only read the last 30 secs or so from the plug right? If you want to do it correctly, you ride constantly in the rpm range you want to check, drop the kill switch and pull the plugs. Put in NEW plugs, ride in a different rpm range for a minute and drop the kill switch. Pull the plugs out, put in new and repeat this until you've got a clear picture of the whole rpm range. I know people tuning engines without O2 sensor readers that go for a ride with 8 sets of plugs. What I'm saying is that when you come home to check your plugs, and you've been riding 15mph in second gear to get to your garage, you don't have an acurate reading of your plugs. Not to say that you are all wrong, but I checked my plugs 3 times so far, and front and rear looked the same all 3 times. | ||

Ingemar, So all it takes is 30 seconds to foul the plug, discolor the ceramic, melt the electrode, etc.? Wow, I've never heard of that. | ||

What I'm saying is that when you come home to check your plugs, and you've been riding 15mph in second gear to get to your garage, you don't have an acurate reading of your plugs. No way that driving down your driveway to your garage are the plug colors going to change. I could see if you are sitting in city traffic but I live in the country and my bike has never just sat and idled. } |
