2004 xb12S bike has 40k but only 2k of those are from me the rest are from the original owner (I just got the bike back in July) I’m getting ready to take her on a 100 mile round trip ride tomorrow.. and I was giving her a once over tonight and I noticed this single crack in my drive belt.. what do you guys think? Should I risk taking the bike (I want to) or take the car instead. The weird thing to me is the belt isn’t dry rotted and there is no other cracks. See pics for reference

I have owned many belt drive bikes and have never seen one do that. If that starts to come apart at speed it wont be pretty. |

Same here, I think I’m gonna park the bike and just take the car. I’ll order a belt tomorrow. Any suggestions on where to get the best deal on a belt and are they interchangeable with any year sportster belts? It’s a good thing I noticed it tonight and it’s a good thing that crack happened to be in my line of sight.. had it been hidden under the chain guard or on the bottom I never would’ve seen it, like I said the rest of the belt is in great shape. |

It looks almost like it was cut with a knife to be honest |

The belt is going to break, it is a matter of when, not if. St Paul Harley is your best bet, sportster belts do not work. https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.co m/products/128t-drive-belt-replacement-for-g0500-1 aah-most-xb-models?_pos=4&_sid=c83a49f18&_ss=r (Message edited by Froggy on September 07, 2020) |

Thanks, yea I’m not going to risk riding it on a 100 mile trip.. I feel like if I baby her she’d probably make it but it’ll be bothering me the whole time and I DO NOT feel like getting stuck on the road |

Hey Corvetteman while you have the wheel off to do the belt check/change the wheel bearings too. They blew out on my 04, luckily at low speed. Replaced the whole thing with a 3-bearing wheel. |

that split is where the belt was join together There's no such thing. The belt is molded as a tube and individual belts slit to width. |

I have a a split in my belt like that , just on the inside not outside. fixing to order as I don't trust it. not much mileage on this belt but i bet that sitting does more harm than good. I've often wondered for those of us that have a lot of down time, if it wouldn't be wise to take tensioner off and let belt relax while it sits for weeks. Just thinking. |

It's not actually a tensioner. The geometry of the swingarm in concert with the "tensioner" creates a zero slack belt path. |

Hey guys, so I ended up ordering a belt.. just a basic drag specialities 128 tooth 1- 1/8 belt. Anyway I’ve never seen swing arm spools like this. All my Japanese sport bikes always had an Allen bolt through the center, these are a solid piece.. are they just threaded in and unscrew?

Yep those are aftermarket sliders, they unscrew. There should be a small hole on the edge that you can stick a small screwdriver or something else for leverage. |

Might be an allen in that hole to lock it in place. You could strip it if you force it without loosening that allen |

I didn’t see any holes on them but will check tomorrow in the daylight |

If they don't have any holes for a lock screw, be careful putting a wrench on them. I would try to loosen the slider from the axles threaded side (still lefty loosey on the brake side) I have had some sliders that have a hex to lock into the hex side(belt side) that you put the tool in. Or maybe they are just threaded together and cranked on. |

The slider on the break side has a hole init, the one on the belt side has nothing.. |
