Someone here in BW made some discs with a zerk fitting for lubing the front sprocket bearing. I bought one, but didn't install it then (3-4 years ago!) I want to now, but can't find any info. What appears to be bearing 8966 on parts book page 30 seems to have a rubbery surface that is flush with the shaft.

Can anyone point me to the BW thread for this?

You pull that rubbery surfaced seal out of the end of the pulley shaft and press that aluminum one in its place. The 8966 bearing you speak of is behind that seal. You can puncture that seal in the center and use a small 90 degree pick tool to pull it out.

Is that a thing? I never heard of Buells having issues with that needle bearing before now.

Me neither, but the original thread made me curious. I am not real hot to unseal the bearing, so I'll see if it rings a bell with anybody before I proceed.

You could prick a tiny hole in the center of the seal and grease it with a syringe if you're worried about it?

Centrifugal force should keep it from leaking back out as long as you don't overdo it. But its $6 if you want a new bearing: )

I really like how us Buellers solve problems for ourselves and others

That seal is not attached to the bearing. It is pressed in after the two bearings, it just caps off the end of the mainshaft gear and keeps transmission oil in and dust out. The aluminum piece takes place of that seal and allows you to put grease in from time to time. The needle bearings that are behind that seal don't always get a lot of lubrication unless you lean right, especially the outer of the two bearings. So, with sitting on the sidestand for long periods of time those bearings can dry out and rust over as well as if you ride a lot of miles without leaning it can wear out those bearings when little oil can get to them. It's not a huge problem but someone made those first over in england I believe to fill that cavity with grease instead and every oil change you just glob a few pumps into the zerk fitting to fill any that may have broke down or slung out into the transmission. If you don't want it, I would like one.

Ahhh, thank you for the clarification

I keep mine on a paddock stand, but riding it as often as I can seems to be the solution for most issues. I'll never need to start a 'help! My battery died thread', haha
