I am thinking of pulling out the carbon cannister on the xb12r (shhhhh-don't tell). It looks like I could then extend the compartment under the pillon seat and get more space. The question is- What about the 49 state or world version xbr's-do they make use of the space since they don't have the cannister anyway?? If so I'd like to purchase the longer glove box. xbolt12 | ||

Ummmm, I think that cannister your looking at is for the rear shock. Rear shock is a gas one. (Message edited by cataract2 on November 21, 2004) | ||

Ah you made me go look! Ok cannister sits between the box & battery. So does the shock reservoir on the left side. I think that space is empty on the 49 bikes as the reservoir is still in the way on one side. Doh! Just looked at the manual and it looks like that spot is just empty in the 49 bikes. I think you will have to do the extension yourself as their box looks the same as ours. | ||

Cataract2 he's got a CA model. The 49 state model has the same plastic tray "glove box" as the CA model. Mike. | ||

Thanks. I think I'm going to do it. Can anyone tell me exactly where on the left side of the bike the fuel vent hose terminates on the non-CA bikes? Also does the no-CA bike have a cap on the spigot (fuel vapor return) on the throttle body, or does it have a treaded plug? xbolt12 | ||

The fuel vent hose routing is the same for all XBs until it gets past the cooling fan. At that point, the 49-state version goes directly down behind the rider left footpeg bracket. At about the level of the footpeg, there's a little plastic ring the vent hose threads through to keep it pointing down. One important thing to note is that the 49-state version norprene hose terminates just before it threads through the opening next to the cooling fan. At this point, a smaller diameter rigid plastic tube (like a thick plastic straw) is inserted inside the norprene (rubbery) hose. This plastic tube is long enough to reach about to the bottom of the footpeg bracket. Does that make sense? Routing diagram is in Appendix D of the 03 service manual. Mike. Well I've pulled the cannister since I found the tube going to the throttle body has a hole worn in it from rubbing against the ignition coil (intake leak). Turns out the CA bike has the plastic tube on the way to the cannister anyway. Do you know if the non CA throttle body is tapped for the return from the cannister and is it simply plugged? I hate to just plug the hose, I would rather have a more permanent solution. xbolt12 | ||

I've spoken to the dealer regarding having the charcoal cannister taken off. I asked if I've to plug up the line once the cannister is removed. The guy told me he didn't even bother doing that. He just followed the line and yank out everything. | ||

The figure below shows the throttle body assembly. As you can see at location 1, it appears it is tapped, so you would be able to put a proper plug in.  Mike. hkwan- You might want to consider seeking advice from a competent mechanic. (Message edited by xb9er on November 29, 2004) |
