I know that there has been few topics about oil consumption ob XBs but i am not sure if I found an answer. My XB12X had an oil pump failure, the pump was replaced, piston rings were replaced, valves were checked, heads ware resurfaced and engine was assembled with set of new gaskets. After this small "service" the problem with oil consumption appeared. I have made a few photos of heads (inlet side) with inspection camera. As You can see it is full of "oil" ...
I am wondering if it has something to do with piston rings? maybe something with timing advance? or this is just oil that came from inlet through breathers? Engine runs on MOTUL 7100 4T 20W50. If anyone is familiar with something like this I would be grateful for some help. |

A couple of thoughts . . . . Ring leakage can result in high(er) crankcase pressure, pushing excess oil through the breathers. So, a compression check. To check, get the engine to operating temperature. Throttle wide open, and crank the engine over 5-7 compression strokes. Should have 120PSI or more. Then add 1/2oz of oil and try again. If the pressure is much higher on second test, rings are suspect. Second suspect would be valve stem seals. Not really familiar with a good way to check those, other than remove-replace. Sorry . . . My '06 XB12X looks similar and it is due to the routing of crankcase gases through the intake. That was before the crankcase breather filter mod was done. Now the oil is all over my swingarm instead XD |

And if the spark plug is actually that white, and not an effect of photography, I would really be concerned about a Very Lean mixture. . . |

I see nothing is wrong with oil consumption. The valves on my 2009 Buell XB12 Scg and intake are more dirty. Even it has breather reroute mod. (Message edited by Tpehak on June 24, 2019) |

Sorry, there is NO WAY to verify that the engine is running lean by looking at that end of the plugs porcelain. Especially if the plugs are new. With todays gas/methanol mix, you need to look deep into the body of a "fresh" plug and look at the color after a few miles. A properly fueled engine "should" have that end of the porcelain nice and white, especially a plug with few miles on it. Mike |

Well, I recently cleaned and reconditioned the valves and replaced the guide valve seals on my Buell and just 1000 miles later they looked same dirty.
