I recently acquired a 2006 Buell XB12SS and just would like to verify that the described behavior is normal.

The bike is equipped with a Race ECM, K&N air filter, and Original Drummer exhaust. Odometer reads ~13,000 miles.

The Buell feels slower than my Yamaha fz-07 when below about 4.5k rpm. I understand the bike is a bit heavier and has taller gear ratios, but I would think that would be offset by the amount of torque this bike has. The fz-07 would easily power wheelie in first gear with a roll on of the throttle and the front wheelie would get light in second gear (I weigh about 210lbs). The Buell does not do this, though the power explodes around 4.5k rpm and surges me forward. Feels pretty tame below 4k.

Is this expected? I have done all the proper maintenance.

The "Butt dyno" is always so hard to calibrate...: )

In my experience of owning or riding 20+ XB Buell's, I'd say a 1st gear roll-on power wheelie should be easy. even 2nd on the S bikes. The Ss with the slightly longer frame may want a clutch-up in 2nd, but should still be easy.

Ar you sure the rear tire (or clutch) isn't slipping? The only way you can really answer your question is to go have it put on a dyno. Otherwise were all guessing.

I will have to give my shop a call when they open tomorrow to ask about scheduling a dyno run. I am not sure what that might cost.

The tire is definitely not slipping, nor do I think the clutch is. I don't think that explains the surge in power either. I saw some dyno curves for the race exhaust that would maybe explain this. That configuration seems to loose power down low and gain a bunch up high. However, this is not the Buell Race Exhaust.

Cirwin -

First, don't buy into the "massive torque" claims. A coupla foot pounds here or there over the full curve, but nothing massive (8 or 10ft. lbs.).

Second, yea, my XB12s carries my 265lb. butt around pretty well, for what it is. Granted not at all like my past Japanese 1000cc sport bikes, or my 1190RX does, but for an old tractor engine, it does pretty well...WHEN...tuned properly.
What it doesn't do in overall power, it makes up for it in handling.

Just because it's got a "Race ECM", doesn't mean it's tuned as well as it could be.
My XB won't hardly run well at all with the (stock) Race ECM. I have a home made modified muffler, and the paper air filter in the OEM air box.
The engine wanted so much more fuel to run "right..!" (the whole fuel curve), I was a bit curious.
I put a stock muffler back on, just to see what would happen. It ran so rich that I had to replace the spark plugs because of the unburnt fuel on them.

So yea, may just need some careful/quality tuning.

Mike

Having ridden an FZ7 and owned 3 XB12 bikes, those two are apples to oranges. The FZ is likely 70-80 lbs lighter and geared much shorter.

Fun bike, BTW!
