Im in the process of purchasing from Newfoundland and must transport to northern Michigan. I've had bikes shipped within the states, but not across the border. I'm told the m/c must have DOT and EPA labels on it in order to be transported into the states. If it's not on the bike I need letter from Mfg confirming it meets std's! So my question to you all is does anyone know where to look for the DOT and EPA labels on the XB12STT. Also, has anyone done a purchase like this recommend a Customs Broker in the Michigan area? Like the muffler noise compliance thats stamped into the stock muffler? The 'wear your helmet' sticker? I'm afraid they'll have to be more specific. The front of the Buell manual has all the locations for the stickers, including those. | ||

I believe the sticker you are looking for will be a clear (except for the printing) label on the right side of the frame, just aft of the VIN stamping. The one on my '08 XB12STT gives the date of manufacture, ect and a statement that 'This veh conforms to all of the applicable regulations' that were in effect t the time of manufacture . . . Thanks Dave. The seller sent me pictures of the label on the bike, unfortunately is states that it meets all the Canadian regulations, not much help! I did discover that going onto the Harley Davidson web site, scroll to the bottom of the screen, click on the link "FAQ". It has a link for a form to IMPORT a motorcycle either HD or Buell. Complete the form with VIN #, Engine #, etc. they will supply verification! Now the waiting game, the technical assistant said it would only take a couple days and they would send it fax! This is defiantly a good find, I was told by Customs Broker that with out the intact labels or letter from parent company for verification that it meets all the United States D.O.T. & E.P.A regulation that there was NO WAY the m/c could be imported into the US!! The also said if it has been "modified" from stock (exhaust etc.)it wouldn't pass the regulatory standard and again NO entry into the USA. The HD wed site in this case has been extremely helpful. Talking to the HD assistant he said that the Buell XB12STT in the Barracade Orange was a super sweet looking bike, he even verified that the current owner had all the warranty issue resolved! Can't wait, the bike has 626 miles or so on it, it's been sitting in a garage so she'll need a few new things tires, battery, tank flush, new oil etc. but it is in mint condition! Major excited! Now if I can just sell the Luguna Blue EBR 1190SX... | ||

STT is in garage! After completing all the forms required from US Customs website, I get to the US border Windsor/Detroit and tell me we don't need those, fill this form out! Best part is that all the import companies told me I had to pay a 2.4% tax ($450.00tax) on purchase price of motorcycle. The custom officer asked me "So where was m/c manufactured" I tell him Wisconsin he says' Why would you pay fee for a product manufactured in USA? No fee! Anyhow here is my dilemma, I've replaced the odometer face from Kilometers to MPH, how to change the odometer to record miles or convert he 656 KL to miles! I took it to Buell friendly Harley Dealer (I purchased 1125CR there) they attempted to convert, no luck. They discovered that there are two versions for the instrument cluster, one for each Miles and one for Kilometers (In this case Canadian market). I talked with the Buell rep at St.Pauls previously they said it could be done, I've sent him a email asking the question again. Does anyone know how this is done? I have found a web site or two on companies that will do the conversion. I'm thinking I can take the instrument cluster that is miles and switched the face and just get that updated to the proper miles etc. I will contact the main Harley headquarters on the subject, they were very helpful on issuing proof for it meeting all the US DOT and EPA regulations. Any help on method of converting the KL to miles would be extremely helpful! | ||

The cluster cannot be converted by anything us mortals or a dealer has access too, it would need to be done by the manufacturer. It will be a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to get a domestic cluster of similar mileage and swap that in, or get used to Metric. | ||

I don't know about converting from Km to Miles but I do know if you purchase a new instrument cluster, you can increase the O.O mileage to reflect what it is now. The Odometer uses a count-up chip that will allow you to add miles, but not subtract them. The speedo shop could help, but a pulse generator would be a simple solution if you are electronics friendly. I wold make SURE to have a proper/notorized paper trail, when dealing with odometer rules  HTH |
