Bought a late model 8 row oil cooler from a 2010 Uly to go on my 2006. Any issues installing this due to old, lower capacity oil pump? I have the updated oil lines. |

What does a slightly larger oil cooler have to do with the oil pump? Once the lines are full everything the same, same pressure, same flow, you'll be fine. |

actually the pressure drop will be greater across a larger cooler. This is for two reasons, one is increases friction loss of the piping, two is the increased viscosity realized by the lower exit temperature of the oil. As to whether you will have any issues that's a whole other story. More cooling capacity usually outweighs any downside in my experience. |

Airhead BMWs had thermostat valves in their oil cooler systems to prevent over-cooling. |

Luc1f3r: Actually both added friction and higher viscosity would increase pressure (but reduce flow). The difference between the 6 row ('03-'07) and 8 row ('08-up) oil coolers is about 10" of tubing so it would probably be immeasurably small though. Heck, I wouldn't even recommend it unless you live in PHX and ride all summer, or on the sun, but that's pretty much the same thing Ducbsa: I would LOVE to work out a thermo-bypass like that for XB's. I firmly believe there's more damage done to air/oil cooled engines from running too cold than too hot. Just like most people running 20w-50 in the winter Duh. I wondered about no auto valve when I got my bike. If I still rode in cold weather, I might tape over the cooler scoop. |

Shoggin: Pressure drop is a term used when sizing heat exchangers. It refers to the delta between inlet and exit. So yes the pressure will be higher on the inlet side and lower on the outlet. From an engineers perspective adding 33% more cooling capacity is quite a bit. The thing to remember is that viscosity is increasing as you are cooling, exaborating the pressure drop. |

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. Now i'm more confused than ever. As far as whether it is worthwhile, I assume there was a good reason Buell added the extra cooling capacity. |

Sorry for the confusion. you'll be just fine here on planet Earth with the bigger cooler if you ride in a hot climate. Planet Aspergers might be too complex for such a simple mod though Hoo boy! Buell added the bigger cooler to the '08 bikes along with the Thunderstorm engine in '08. It was rated the same HP, but both the cooler and the pump got an upgrade.
