I just picked up a 09 XB12SS with extremely low mileage on it (under 500). At some point the bike went down on the right side as there is a tear in the seat, a paint re-spray under the right side frame puck, a bent front brake lever and either the handle bars are bent or the forks are tweaked. When I ride the bike it tracks straight but the bars are turned (or bent) but it looks to me light the triple tree/forks are turned slightly to the right. I am planning on jacking up the bike, loosen all the fasteners and to see if I can get the front end to "relax" and re-center its self.. my question is, is this the way to go about this or is there s better way? There are no scratches on the forks, wheel, caliper etc.. Other than this, its a beautiful bike. Would anyone have a PDF version of the owners manual? Thanks | ||

I'm no expert but that plan makes sense. You should test alignment of the forks buy placing a surface plate such as a flat piece of glass so that it rests against the fork tubes. When the plate contacts the forks in four corners without rocking the forks are aligned. Assuming you rest the plate on the fork uppers (female), this will not rule out a bent slider (male) tube. Presumably a bend will manifest itself with binding etc. To be sure you may have to pull the forks and measure runout. Or get a surface plate small enough to fit onto the sliders with the bike jacked up and forks fully extended. Just my $0.02 | ||

Have you tried loosening up the clamps on the fork tubes and "relaxing" them? Old dirtbike trick for fixing "bent forks". | ||

Don't forget to loosen the axle too while aligning everything. Retighten it last. Mike | ||

The basic method for assembly is loosen everything then bounce the front end up and down a few times to let it line up then tighten up the bolts in the triple clamps, axle last. But if there is a suspicion of misalignment or bending I would go through the other checks as well. | ||

Just wanted to update, I removed the wheel, removed the forks, loosened the tree and put it all back together.. All good now! Got to be honest, the frame is wider and it does not have the same leg room as my Firebolt. I wish my Firebolt frame was on this bike, being 6'4" I could use the knee room.. I also picked up an owners and shop manual from a fellow Badweb'er Other than that the bike only has 475 miles! |
