I have a 12R.I am almost sick of explaining that I DO NOT have a headlight out!Besides that and the possibilty of gaining extra unwanted attention by the "MAN",Has Anyone figured out how or can you run them both at the same time on(DIM)?I'm guessing you could but then you would have no Brights???Anyone

At this point I run on high beam during the day light ours so I don't hear "You have a light out" all that much. I'm sure with day decrease in day light hours That I will start hearing it more often too. Really what were those electrical guys thinking at Buell when they thought the current light system was a good idea.

Firebolt is not the only sportbike with only one of the twin lights on at low beam, I see other's all the time

I replaced mine with 2 highbeams, one aimed slightly lower. It's a complicated process. Search here for "Hella" on how to install. You can get them at http://www.rallylights.com/hella/90mm_modules.asp

I wonder, could you get another 'stock' high beam and mount it in place of the low beam???

Keep the switch in the middle and they will both stay on.

That's because they are running their high-beams.

No, there are other bikes that run one light on low beam too. Mostly Hondas. RC51 and F4i I know for sure.

I've found that I can run both beams even at night on the highway and it is rare that someone flashes their high beams in return. I usually run low on city streets in traffic and I'm careful to switch to high only when nobody is nearby.

I just bought a 04 xb12r this past weekend and the first question I asked was to get the second light to work. Is it true that there is a by-pass module to plug in that will make both lights work on low beam ????? I was told there was by someone I met on a ride the other day.

Rob, if they're on 'high' they're both on. On dim it's only one of them burning. The low beam side has a little plastic piece on the inside that blocks off the top half of the beam. Oh, there's no 'module' as both lights are single element...
Just an FYI, I was behind a friend the other day as we were both exiting the highway. He was driving an SUV and he mentioned that it looked like I had a 'flashlight' for a headlight. I was only running the dim at the time. He only mentioned it as he rides also and wanted to let me know I wasn't very noticeable. He did say the taillights looked decently bright, hehe...
Got me to thinking, with the top part of the beam blocked on the dim, if you're around a higher profile vehicle pay attention, they might not see ya... Just a thought...

Kevin

OH, and like I asked before: I wonder if you could replace the dim side assembly with another high beam assembly and just aim it a bit lower??? Anybody tried this with a stock 'bright' assembly???

I been meanig to get down to the local pep boys and try out some dual filament bulb in paralell circuit. That way I can run the "low beam" wires to the low filament of each bulb and the "high beam" to the high. Dunno how it will work with the reflectors but worth a try. Only thing to fix is the current drain of both lights when on high.

Or if you wanted, you could make it so when it's on "low beam" have both lights on the low beam filament, and when on "high beam" only the high beam side goes to the high beam filament, while the other stays on the low beam filament. That way you'd only have to have one dual beam head lamp to worry with, the other could stay stock.
Just a suggestion.

The plastic piece inside the low beam is easy to remove and helps make you more visible. At least that's what two Bueller's told me when I was riding behind them. They both noticed it right away.

At least one person switched out his low beam for a high beam. I don't remember who it was but he did post about it here.

I like Glitch's idea. I'm too stupid to do the wiring so if someone does this please post detailed instructions with photos! : D

Couldn't a splitter be used on the low beam wiring so that the high beam headlight can be wired in with the low beam headlight? So when the low beam light is on, then the high beam light is on, too? Would be a great setup for adding in fog lights using the high beam switch.

The XB#R stock bulbs are a single filament H3 halogen lamp. The factory bulb is one of these.

I replaced both with H3 "SilverStar" bulbs They made a difference in the light out put. See below for examples

The problem with the dimness lies with the headlight itself. Changing bulbs helps very little. It's plainly terrible - everyone who I ride says the same thing - it's hardly visible during daylight. At nighttime, forget about it, can't see. That's why I switched my headlights to Hella 90mm module, running high beam on both sides. Now I'm highly visible even with one light on.

Dcmortalcoil, are those hella lights a direct replacement or did you have to modify anything.

Thanks Mike, changing to another high beam assembly might be a winter time project. Although in Texas we don't have much cold weather...
Gowindward, the bulbs you changed to were the 65watt ones??? I'm guessing you got them at the local auto parts??? How much???
Thanks All, Kevin

Yeah, I looked them up, the Sylvania SilverStars are 65 Watts. The suggested retail price is $50.00 a pair! They won't last as long as the 55 Watt bulbs either. Any idea how long they last Gowindward?

Mike.

Remove the little tab on the low beam by removing the lens with four philips screws and then remove the little philips head that attaches the tab (deflector) to the housing and re-assemble. It helps. Run both beams always in the daytime, you should always do this for safety anyway. Run both beams at night when ever you can get away with it.

I have not tried brighter bulbs yet.

Sylvania's last about 3 months. Riding the 40 mile commute each way, with the high beams on all the time.

I only put the Silver Stars in about a month (1000 mi) back. If I remember right they cost about $15 each at Walmart. They are H3 ST's and 55watts sames as the OEM bulb

Robxb,

That's not a direct replacement. It needs a mod. Check out here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/41556.html?1070911449

On the website the 55 watt Sylvania's are called "Standard". Maybe they package them differently now and call them SilverStar also? I'll have to get a pair because I need spares anyway.

XBolt12, thanks... That's cheaper than buying another high beam assembly... I had thought I had heard that the lens assemblies were sealed and if you tried to remove the tab you were 'breaking' stuff... I guess memory is the first to go... : ) I better write this down for a winter project before I forget... : )

Thanks again, Kevin
