I think I need a tps reset. It's been a very long time since I did one but after searching I got pretty confused. My bike does actually run pretty good but I have a fair amount of popping when I let off the throttle, but otherwise everything seems fine. Is there a simple answer to this question, or a post that I missed ? fwiw I'm in Charlotte NC if there are any buellers near me. It's a 2003 with the factory race kit..exhaust, ecm, etc. | ||

If the popping started our of nowhere check your exhaust nut at the head and make sure the aren’t loose or you have a gasket letting air in. When the last time you repacked your muffler? | ||

At one t8me they made a repack kit that came with new rivets and packing. You needed to drill out the rivets, repack it and rivet it pack together. | ||

I bought it new (really), and put the race kit on myself a few years later..with a dealer tps reset at that time, but I don't think it's been done since. Yes, that long ago. It's always popped on decel, but I don't ride it much. I was riding it more lately in the last few weeks and honestly couldn't remember if it was more than before so I was wondering if a tps reset would just be something good to do. Once I started googling it I quickly became confused. I did find a youtube video that showed the process and the 5.5 volt reading. I guess I'm just wondering if this is something I should do for good luck. And if so what the process is. A lot of the information I found was for later model years when it was baked into the bikes. | ||

The service manual has a pretty simple explanation of a TPS re-set, just follow the steps one at a time. You can get a service manual downloaded for free at Buellmods.com or Buelltooth.com Did the "Buell race kit" come with the matching ECM? And I 2nd what Lance said about re-packing the muffler. | ||

If the popping is new, you have an exhaust leak somewhere. You should try to find it and fix it. Don't worry about repacking the muffler..! I removed the packing from mine when I did an internal redesign of the routing. No big deal..! If it's always popped under deceleration, again, no problem. That's just because it's a little lean in the low rpm "hex cells" in the fuel maps. No harm will come. Mike | ||

By "race kit exhaust" do you mean the muffler with the dual exits or the multi-sectional Biesen race header/exhaust? | ||

The 03 race ECM was just the regular ecm with a race sticker and tune, ecmspy should be fine working on it. | ||

You can always go in with ECM-Spy and add 5 clicks to the 0% maps for both cylinders so not so lean on decel. | ||

Way late to the party but repacking the race canister is for the tube frame models, the Buell Race canister for the XB has no rivets to drill out. Intake or exhaust leak would cause the popping but a TPS reset never hurts. |
