Picked up a new to me 06 Uly (40ish k miles on it) On the ride home had no issues, but since then I have noticed when the bike warms up the neutral light comes on (when the bike is in gear) It starts dim, and slowly brightens up. Ive changed fluids and been through the bike and seen no major indications of the problem. Ideas where to look? Sensors that I could possibly test or replace? Though its not a big deal, it isn't cool when the bikes in gear and you hit the starter button and it wants to run away. | ||

If the neutral switch is not the cause; check the main wire harness in the steering head area. They are prone to getting pinched there. By chance is the last 5 digits of the vin 01189 (Message edited by teeps on June 04, 2018) | ||

Not quite the same # but not far off. Thought I had it when I found a wire going to the head that branched to 3 and was cracked, but that was only for the turn signals. hard to chase down when it only does it when hot. Is there a trick to testing the neutral switch? (where is the neutral switch hidden on these?) | ||

Take off the plastic pulley cover on the engine. Its right behind the pulley. You can get to it with needle nose pliers. It's a single wire and will have continuity to ground when activated. You can test the neutral light circuit by having the ignition on, ground ing the wire, and the light should come on. Neutral sensors are cheap and do get corroded in there. They can be cleaned, but did I mention they are cheap?? haha | ||

Shoggin, thanks for the lesson, that should help a lot! Teeps, I was getting that vibe. Though Im in Colorado its entirely possible. I still wonder now and then where my firebolt ended up (should have never sold it, even though Im too banged up to ride it anymore) | ||

unplugged the sensor and still getting false light. Looks like I get to chase more wires again. | ||

Yeah Nate, at least it does that for me. BUT it only does it when the bike is hot, so I get to chase HOT wires for breaks! I did notice a wad of non factory tape on the harness near by. That will be my next spot to chase. Since its turning out to not be a quick fix, it might just wait until winter when its not riding weather. Just gotta remember to NEVER trust the light and don't hit the starter when not holding the clutch |
