2009 Buell Xb12SS with 24K miles. Drummer exhaust, breather reroute, open air box with K&N, EBR ECM. My routine is to let the motorcycle idle for about 3-4 minutes for the first start of the day before I get on and ride. Everything is fine, as the motorcycle gets up to speed and operating temperature. When I stop and turn off the bike, to get gasoline for example, and then turn it back on, if I put it in gear and go right after starting, the exhaust tone will be a bit coarse and choppy. If I let the motorcycle idle for 20 seconds, it will not do that. Is this normal, or is there something that I can check out/adjust? |

Plugs are fouling when you shut it off. |

I see. Is there anything I can do about that? |

Why...how would the spark plugs be "fouling" when he shuts the engine down ? Other than giving it full throttle the instant there is no power to the spark plugs... Inquiring minds would like to know. For what it's worth, my XB12s hasn't done anything like this that I can tell. Will pay close attention to it tomorrow morning. Mike |

Yea...close as I can tell, the same idle quality as before shutting down for fuel vs. just after starting after fueling. Mike |

Is your bike a Cali model with the charcoal canister? Could be filling with fumes overnight or as you fill up and trying to purge through the intake (very rich) right at start up. (Message edited by shoggin on February 13, 2018) |

Let it idle for 20 seconds. Problem solved. |

How long is the bike off for? If you can log, see what temp you go down to when you restart and check on your clt temp. If the temp is such, you maybe back on cold start enrichment. Being a dynamic system , cold start enrichment may be only on for that 20 seconds or so till ecm takes it out of enrichment mode. Another viewpoint is all. I have a stock ecm on my 07x and I've noticed this at times in cooler weather. Whether the motor cools that much is debatable, but the clt sensor loses temp in a hurry un till fan turns off at 170c. Cold start enrichment turns off at 180c as motor rewarms. |

Today, while I was riding, the bike blew the 15 AMP ignition fuse. Let the bike totally cool off and replaced the fuse. 30-45 minutes later, while riding, blew the 15 amp fuse again. Swapped it, got 40 feet, blew again. Let the bike cool, put in a temporary 20 amp fuse to get me 2 miles to my house. The coarseness I described was rather pronounced the whole ride home. |

Fuel pump wires are shorting inside the tank, or fuel pump drawing too much current? (Message edited by greg_e on April 14, 2018) |

It's the facken seat compressing the cables. The positioning of the ECM and all the cables under the seat on the XB12Ss is purely retarded. |

Gregoxb - What Greg e said. Had the "exact" same problem with my XB12s about a year ago. Pull the pump, put protection on the burned wire(s) and put it back together. I didn't attempt to "fix" anything as I didn't want to remove any of the wires from where they were attached. I put a piece of vinyl tubing around the shorted wires. I made it long enough that it will not fall off/out of place and will fully protect all of the wires from any further chaffing on the sharp edges of the bracket. BAD work by the Buell designer(s). DO NOT use any silicone to seal or protect anything. Gasoline will eat the silicone within a week. Mike |

1 Mike, did you slit the tubing to get it over the wires? (Message edited by ducbsa on April 15, 2018) |

No, it is the seat contacting the harness and ecm wiring that is causing the short. (Message edited by Gregoxb on April 15, 2018) |

Ok, check it more carefully because it could have also cracked the connector loose on the ecm. |

Ducbsa - Yes, in a spiral pattern to make it more difficult for it to, "just fall off" if the tube relaxed any. Mike |

I located the frayed wires. They were at the bifurcation of the ECM cable bundles, under the seat. There was a frayed gray and adjacent black wire. Thank you for your help guys. |
