Well I went ahead and got a 2009 XB12XT I found at a used car dealership. I have had a KLR 650, a V-Strom 650, and a F800GS as my progression of ownership. The most recent bike, the GS, was surprisingly soulless. I never realized a bike could be so boring. So I scoured the internet for something fun with luggage and found the Buells. It has been a few months of searching before I found this Uly. It has 11k miles but has been sitting. Hopefully I will get it on the road soon.

Nice find! Congratulations on the purchase! I am a fairly new Bueller myself,(same bike and same color only mine is an '08) and like you, I found an immediate connection with the character of this bike. Warning!- people are going to be continuously asking you about your perma-grin. |

It will be interesting to see what attention I get with this bike. The V-Strom mostly got noticed by other strommers and people who thought it looked good. The GS got an unusual amount of attention from Harley riders lol. I have already started to check out the Uly section and the knowledge base for sure. I am still trying to decide on things like oil and filter choice. Congrats on the 08 and thanks everyone for the warm welcome. |

No sense reinventing the wheel for no reason. I've got 40k on my 06 UlyX, running nothing but factory filters and Syn3 since new. Change every 5k miles, ride, smile, repeat. Take your time and set up your suspension, the owners manual has an outstanding suspension section that goes over the nuances and settings based on body weight and cargo weight; it can absolutely turn the bike from total crap into a magic carpet, once you get it right. I second that...... Spend the time to get the suspension correct, it pays HUGE dividends; especially setting the initial sag. Erik and the elves REALLY understood suspension and dynamic loading during cornering. It is amazing what a single millimeter change in front fork height will do to such a short-wheelbase, steep head angle bike. Truly night and day, and can't be overstated enough. Welcome to the club, you won't ever be the same. |

I was new a few years ago, and learned very quickly that this truly is a 'community'. VERY helpful people on this board....and a lot of valuable technical information, not a lot of squids. Don't be surprised if you buy another one.....most of us have. Stick to synthetic oils, I use Amsoil, but opinions vary, and use Harley oil filters. A K&N is common along with opening up the airbox. At the risk of 'angering the gods', these are relatively 'simple-stupid' air cooled motors, with hydraulic lifters that never need adjustment, with a belt final drive. You truly ride these for 10s of thousands of miles with NO service interruption beyond oil changes, minor adjustments, and tires. Oh - And buy a NOCO Genius 1100 (<$50) and keep it plugged in when you don't ride it. V-Twins don't like weak batteries....kills the sprag clutch on the starter when they sneeze during a weak or hot start. |

I am fortunately the bike came with the manual for the same year. I will look into the suspension section for sure. I went for my first real ride today. Holy hell... The bike is way better than I am at turning. I may have been full clench all the way through the Twisties but I was grinning the whole time. I feel like I am learning how to ride all over again and am loving every second of it. The oil is Castrol vtwin synth until I get some amsoil in. I just needed something since the dealer I got it from over filled the hell out of it with who knows what. The filter is a Wix? |

The correct Harley filter is good and not expensive. I use Mobile 1 VTwin oil, easy to get and works well. |

I bounce between Amsoil and Harley Syn3, whichever is more accessible. Usually it is Syn3 as it is available at any Harley dealer. I recommend the Buell oil filter, like Greg said it is good and not expensive. There are a bunch of aftermarket filters that fit that are designed for various Toyotas, I've read that the Buell oiling system is too low in pressure for them. The result is that the oil ends up bypassing the filter. |

Have to agree with Greg and Froggy - use the Buell filters (I misspoke before saying Harley). This is a dry sump system (what most high-end race vehicles use) to avoid oil starvation or cavitation at extreme lean angles or under gyroscopic forces. You can ride a wheelie on these forever without starving the heads for oil. A dry sump system is 2-stage by design and gathers the oil vs. letting it gravity drain to a sump. At extremes, oil is always present. As a result of the complexity and cost of a dry sump, Erik and the elves raised the performance bar. Because of this, I wouldn't use anything but the Buell filter personally. |

If you haven't already, do check the primary fluid level before you go for another ride. There is a chance that in changing the oil, they unwittingly drained the primary instead of the engine oil, then overfilled the engine oil. It's not unheard of. |

I changed the primary so I know it has oil. I will have to find a good place for the Buell filters. I am using a Toyota compatible one now. I am also ordering a new rear tire and belt. I will keep the old belt as a backup. Man, it is nice to have luggage. |

Good to hear that the primary fluid is/was in order. I notice the canister -- I'm guessing it was from California at some point? If you're willing to share, I'm interested in what sort of deal you got on the bike. Enjoy the ride! |

I was wondering what that canister was since I don't see it on other Buells. It would be nice to replace or remove it. The bike was posted at $5800, I paid $3940. |

Good to hear you got a great deal, sad to hear our XT's are worth so little. Especially one just coming off of break in (smile) The common form of attention is someone coming up and telling you that you have a headlight out. As you proceed to flop between high/low beam, ask them which one! |
