So I just got back into riding again about bought a 2005 XB12S. Only a few minor things wrong with it that I'm fixing one by one, but the one that is puzzling me is the idling. When I first start it up it idles almost fine but dips down to about 800-900 RPM but never dies. After riding it for about 15 minutes or so it will be idling fine at stop lights. It also starts up and runs fine after riding it and it is still warmed up. Any ideas on what is happening here? | ||

I'd guess an intake leak that stops once everything is warm and expands. | ||

The idle adjustment might be off though too. Some people like them to lope and stumble like a Harley. Stupid is as stupid does... If the bike is new to you as I think you say, there is an adjustment screw near the front jug on the left side of the bike that you can reach in and a just by hand. A small turn to the right I think will raise the idle. Do it in small amounts until you get a happy idle around 1100 or so. If you find that it hangs high and takes a moment for it to decelerate to idle at a stop when riding warm, that is an indication that it is too high. Other than that - a stumble and poor running after warm up was my indicator of leaking seals... | ||

I would: Clean the throttle plate (butterfly.) Reset the TPS (zero point) after the engine is at operating temperature. Adjust the idle speed (engine at op/temp) to 1100 rpm. | ||

So, did a TPS reset and it is running a little smoother while warm. It was a little high a 6.5 at idle. Now I have it at 5.5 and it's idle nicely at 1050-1100 RPM. I still need to get a new filter for it and change all the fluids before I feel comfortable taking her on long rides. Hopefully tomorrow morning she will fire up nicely and not dip into the 800 rpm range. | ||

After, cleaning the butterfly and doing a TPS (zero) reset. The TPS reading at idle is irrelevant long as the idle speed is 1100 rpm. |
