I've had a 05 XB9SX for 8+ years now with 10k on it currently. No issues. But with my new commute now looking to getting a Uly with the big 12 in for something new. Looked at an 06 locally with almost 12k miles on. Was dropped once on right side, but otherwise in decent shape for a 11 year old bike. My main concern is the rattly sound on right side I noticed at idle. My XB9 doesn't sound this way. Is this normal? If not, is it as bad as a Rod Pin/Bearing? Or maybe just a stuck lifter? Yea, I hear you. Definitely having second thoughts on this You. Nothing wrong with 9 other than not ideal in the highway for long commute, like the Uly. | ||

Exhaust leak? Or Exhaust Interactive Valve shaft spring missing? | ||

The header bolts were replaced, so exhaust leak may be possible if he didn't install new gaskets? Exhaust valve on stock muffler appeared to be connected correctly with the spring. Good thought though. | ||

Hard to say, sounds like just a loose bolt somewhere, but it could be something more serious. If you haven't bought it yet, might as well look at one that doesn't rattle. Or you could ask the seller to take it to a shop, identify and fix the problem and then reopen negotiations? | ||

What did oil look like on dipstick? What weight of oil is he running in motor now? | ||

Oil was very black. He said it was past due for a change. He was running HD conventional 20W50. | ||

That is so strange that a Buell would be up for sale and the most basic maintenance of all is neglected. That's first thing that grabs attention is funny noises and condition of oil. Just saying! | ||

I went out with my buddy recently to buy his first bike in 7 years, an '08 Ulysses. The idiot who owned it had filled the oil tank to the brim, so by the time we got home the air filter had been ruined and the bike was throwing a CEL. Didn't turn out to be the o2 sensor though. It was the exhaust valve, had been disconnected without informing the ECM. Anyway, when we were changing the oil, filter, air filter, etc we also discovered there was - no - oil in the primary. Just a few drops. Makes you wonder why people who can't even read a manual feel compelled to 'work on' a bike. Maybe we were bigger idiots for assuming he did a good job when he told us he had recently changed the oil... anyway, moral of the story: check this stuff when you just bought a bike. I went to buy a used Toyota Tacoma years ago, so I figured I would start at the local dealers and see what they had available. The salesman comes out and shows me a mint condition Tacoma and tells me that one of their mechanic's owned it and kept it mint, he goes on to tell how it went through their 249 points of inspection and it was mechanically mint. I ask him if I could look under the hood so, he pops it open, it was so clean, you could have eaten off of the engine. I lean over and open the oil fill cap, put my nice clean index finger into it and make sure to run up against the sides, take my finger out and, it was black with caked on black carbon, like the oil had never been changed. He looks at me with disbelieve on his face and says, oh that's minor I can have that taken care of. I tell him they had better make it a 250 point inspection and, turn around and walk away ! So yes, whenever buying something mechanical, check everything when possible, never believe the seller ! |
