Just want to slap a 60t on it...ive looked at some kits but they're expensive(takes bucks to boogie) lol. Just wondering if anyone had some individual part numbers or links |

Do a search for fullpower XB conversion- the thread is from 2004 I believe, but it is a good start. I know there are some newer threads- but Fullpower is a friend of mine and knows his stuff. Good place to start- he ended up changing from an idler wheel to a sprocket tensioner- but other than that- I'm planning on doing the conversion to my 08xb uly |

Don't have experience with riding a chain converted xb ,but made a conversion for someone's 04 XB9s last year. After looking all over the web for ratio's etc ,decided for a 20t front and 48t vortex rear sprocket set from someone on this forum. Bought a new 520 x-ring chain and 17t steel tensioner wheel. Made the adjustable chain tensioner and swing arm guard myself. The last i heard was that everything worked perfectly (knock on wood) |

Yes- I am VERY interested in how you made your idler tensioner. I have yet to do my conversion- |

Here some pics of the conversion. see link below for other pics from the tensioner and chain swing arm guard. Made the tensioner from some scrap steel i already had.(10mm and 15mm cut out of a piece of truck frame) The steel tensioner sprocket from , https://www.thebigbearingstore.com/17-tooth-steel- idler-sprocket-for-50-roller-chain/ The sprocket was to wide for the 520 chain ,so had to cut it on a lathe. Also had to make a 5.11mm thick shim ring that sits behind the front sprocket. http://s1356.photobucket.com/user/Brother-in-Buell s/library/Buell%20xb%20chain%20conversion?sort=3&p age=1 (Message edited by Brother in buells on April 09, 2017) (Message edited by Brother in buells on April 09, 2017) |

That is fantastic!!!! What was your rationale for having the swing arm guard not square to the chain? Wear idea? Also- how did you attach the guard to the upper arm? This looks fantastic! |

Thanks for the compliments! And no problem for asking ,the reason for having the guard/chain rub not square/in line is when the rear is compressing it goes in line with the chain. I made it for someone that had still the first series pulleys and belt on his xb9 He broke already a second belt ,so he got a bit upset with it. His riding style was also not that easy ,so he broke more than only the belts. If you want more info or so ,just say it ,or pm me! |

Makes sense- compression squaring the guard to the chain- If I use a 530 chain- was recommended (if memory serves). Do you think the tensioner sprocket would require milling? The thread I referred to above- the 04 lightning conversion - utilized a 530 chain w vortex rear- can't remember the tooth count. I'll post pics when I get my conversion going. |

Yes if you going to use a 530 chain the 50 ansi idler sprocket does fit perfect. The only reason i went for a 520 chain is because the lightly used set of vortex rear sprocket and steel front i bought where for a 520 chain. I could not find any info or a idler sprocket with the correct tooth pitch in the 40 ansi range (that's why you see two different idler sprockets in the pictures) So i had to turn them in a lathe on both sides to make them fit the 520 chain. Don't know where you got your sprockets from ,but PMP sprockets in Texas is very helpful and can make you any ratio. |

And this is the thread you mentioned i guess, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/98206.html?1215006241 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/67225.html had seen it to when looking for gear ratios and chain sprocket info. |

Any piece of good quality steel does work! It's what i had ,and the round curve of the frame piece was exactly what i needed to make the part for the sprocket. I first put the rear and front sprockets on and made sure they where in line ,after that made the adjusting piece and as last the curved piece with the idler sprocket and tack welded them together and spun the wheel to see if things where working how i wanted. after that welded it together from both sides. |

A few more question- and great response to the 31k Uly. :-). After you cut the threads into the tensioner arm- how do you ensure that the tensioner sprocket screw does not back out with vibration over time? Do you have any concerns about that at all? I have a stock 08 rear 2 bearing wheel- where do I look to locate a 3 bearing set up? Do you have any insight there or is that overkill for my bike? Does it really matter in your opinion? |

The bolt that attach the sprocket to the arm has fine thread and i drilled a hole into the end and put a lock pin in. Also used a small drop of red locktite. About the three vs two bearing rear wheel I have no experience with the three bearing wheels. But you can always swap the wheels if you find one. |

The bolt is a shoulder bolt and fitted perfect in the 1/2 sprocket hole. Also shimmed it with a couple rings. |

I keep coming up with thoughts- did you give any thought to a spacer between the tensioner screw and the lower stud? Teflon/brass bumper to protect the stud threads? Was that a concern? |

The studs are not fully threaded ,so that is no issue with damaging the thread. With adjusting everything ,turn the two nuts finger tight you adjust the small tensioner screw ,lock it with the small nut on the tensioner screw ,turn the two bigger nuts good (make sure the adjuster stays in place and not turning with the nuts. Also if you have the chain on the correct length there should no binding when fully compressed. (see where the tensioner sprocket sits ,on the same line with the pivot point of the swing arm) I did disconnected the shock from the swing arm and pushed the wheel up to see how much chain length was needed with no binding. With making the adjustable tensioner and putting it together Check and make the adjusting slot so that it is working for the chain length on your buell. The adjuster/tensioner sprocket is only for keeping the chain from slapping and that there is less pulling back and forth with engine braking. |

I will be ordering from Vortex soon- hopefully they are not really out a month. I will be ordering the same set-up as the Adv.Rider Post as he has the same bike I have (looks like). I may be attempting a ride from TX to OR and back this summer. We shall see. I want the project complete prior to that trip. |

Hey B_I_B! Has it been that long? I took quite a break - the Uly is gone... I have totally overhauled a 2004 XB12 R, in the middle of that project, I purchased another 04 XB12S in boxes. Discovered that bike was able to be rebuilt - sold the R bike and had another 04XB12S fall into my lap. I. Ow own Twin- air cooled V twin XBS’s! The boxed Buell now has a Hammer 1275 kit with a tune from Dave at Buelltooth. }
The other XB is getting the long awaited for CHAIN CONVERSION that you helped me with back in 2017!
All of the parts are on my work bench. All I lack is metal to build the adjustable chain tensioner. I have a 530 chain- 17 tooth roller sprocket- 827-50 rear sprocket- PBI 20 tooth front sprocket and a 108 link 0-ring chain. I am going to attempt something similar to your design of the swing arm guard. I will post pics of the process when done. I wanted to update you as you had invested considerable effort in my quest. I hope all is well and I hope you are still active on this forum.
