Hey guys, I searched the forum but had trouble finding much info, maybe I just suck with this search engine. I'm looking to get a Lightning. I've pretty much only ever owned fully faired sport bikes (CBR600rr, SV650s, Daytona 675, etc...). I'd like something a LITTLE bit more comfortable but still excellent handling for the twisties. I was set on the standard XB12S, but an XB12Ss is for sale on craigslist about 2 hours away from me and it looks to be in good shape. How different is the Long as compared to the standard? Specifically wondering about handling and weight. Thanks |

Allegedly the S handles slightly better. The problem is, unless your name is Danny Eslick or Shawn Higbee, you aren't going to notice the difference. Both have fantastic handling, but the SS tends to be less twitchy giving its longer wheelbase and rake. You won't be disappointed with either model. |

Also, which year SS is it? The 2009/2010 models have a different suspension than previous years, the later suspension raises the bike a little bit and has more travel, making it a bit more comfortable for handling day to day potholes and such. |

The SS has the bigger frame, swingarm and forks off a Ulysses right? So it's kinda like an XB12X, but with Lightning styling. Should provide some more comfort, stability and legroom (which is nice if you're a tall guy). Also therefore looks slightly bigger than the S model, which can be good or bad depending on your preferences. |

The SS shares the frame and swingarm with the Ulysses, but on the 06-08 SS, it uses the same forks as the standard S. The 2009/10 SS uses the same suspension as the 07/08 STT |

I wanted something a bit more stable than my old XBS, so I pulled the trigger on a good (ok, decent) deal on a 2006 SS. There is a difference, but its not anything drastic. The Lightning Long is only "long" compared to other XB's. Its still a shorter bike than just about anything else out there, and falls more in line with the wheelbase of bikes like the CBR250R. My Sportster looks like a raked out chopper parked next to it. That said, I do like mine! Since you are coming from a Daytona, and being used to "traditional" sport bikes, make sure you take the XB out for a test ride first, and keep an open mind. Thanks for the responses. The bike is an 2007. I was aware of the physical differences between the SS and the S, I was more looking for first hand impressions from people who have ridden both. I don't want to give up handling buying the Long, but if they are almost identical then I'm not too worried. I'm 5'11" 185 pounds, so the I think the Long should fit me well. |

I've actually owned both bikes. I'm 5'10 and I felt a little cramped on the S. The SS is a better fit for me. I guess the long and short of it is, that they are more alike than they are different. If that makes sense. If the bikes were in the same shape, with the same mileage, etc. I'd be willing to pay more to get the SS. (Message edited by 34nineteen on January 26, 2017) |

Here's the thing. I had an XB9SX, which I think was a little taller but not longer than the XB9S. And I'm 6'2". The thing fit me like a freaking glove. It was a smaller seat, so after 300+ miles on succesive days there was some serious butt squirming, but in terms of fit it was amazing. I don't fit at all on an SV650 FWIW, the tank flares have me looking like Miley at a concernt. But I probably looked a bit comical. Big guy, little bike. Fortunately for me, whenever I was riding it, I couldn't see myself. So it was nothing but fun for me. Those short wheelbase bikes have such lovely and responsive handling.... You literally feel like you could split a dime on any line you choose. |

Yeah, I'm 6'2" as well. Interested to find out how well I'm going to fit that XB12Scg I bought recently (compared to my XB12X). Haven't really had a chance to try it out though. Roads still covered in salt over here. |

AZMidget who hangs out mostly on the "other board" has an SCG. Besides being a gorgeous bike, it is freaking tiny. Reepi- I love me a SV650, especially a naked 1st gen with a GSXR front end. The later years (2003-)did get reduced seat heights. |

I was riding my SS yesterday and thinking how much more I enjoy it over my old XB12S. I appreciate the more neutral, relaxed handling of the SS. |

I like both, but I am kind of the opposite. My new (to me) XT has that very neutral handling. Less tiring, but I'm still getting used to it. I got used too, and loved, the way my old XB9SX would have to be pushed to hold a line through a corner. When you relaxed, it popped right back to center and straight. I liked that it took some work to turn, it felt more involving and more stable somehow. But I can see how people could prefer either. Both work well. I just have to get used to the XT and not keep tipping in too far on turns. And I will say the XT is much faster and more stable through a sweeper. |

Well I ended up buying the XB12Ss! Glad I did too, very fun bike to ride. In comparison to the Daytona handling: the Daytona was definitely a bit sharper (though to be fair I had the Daytona revalved and sprung for my weight). It seems to take a bit more steering effort to get the Buell low in the corners, but it holds a line well, and with the torque from that motor I'm not convinced I could get through a twisty section of track faster on the Daytona. All in all, glad to be on a Buell! |

Very nice! I always wonder why people sometimes get rid of the covers that have the decals, but this does look nice and clean. Congrats on the purchase! Have you ridden it a lot yet? Like it? |

Yeah it's magic. You know what's even more magical? That isn't a Colorado, it's an Izuzu I-290. Same truck, but ya know! The vette is my project car, freaking thing eats my paycheck. |

And yeah I've been riding it a lot. We've had some great weather here in Missouri (besides the freaking tornado last night) so it's been getting some miles. Freaking love this thing, very nimble and I love the rumble from the Dean Adams exhaust. |
