Bomber, DaveS, & Out'y... I think I may have figured out that intermittent low beam electrical outage on my XB. Color me stoopid. Take an XB, stop & kill the engine while in first gear - low beam headlight does not stay lit [while engine is not running]. Pull the clutch in and/or snick it into nuetral (or stop & kill the engine in nuetral) - low beam headlight stays lit. In either situation though, the high beam will still work. There's no way for me to remember my driving habits back on that day, but I think I totally fooled myself... Why in the world though would the headlight be set up to work / not work this way??? |

If I understand what you're saying. You would want you lights to go off while you started the engine. More power to the starter, less potential to kill the bulb just by starting your bike? |

That makes sense - except that pulling the clutch in (to start the bike) allows the headlight to come [back] on. |

Maybe just another visual reminder that you are in gear? |

wow -- number 1, thanks for the update, number two, sounds like one of those things that snuck outa the factory? they gots lots of things to check, and the logic leading to the symptoms you desrcibed doesn't really affect the operation much, and they may have never noted it . . . . it's one of the things that can happen when you've got more than one person workiong on a project |

With both the key and kill switch in the on position, the low beam comes on and the high beam also works. With the key off and the kill switch on, the low beam does not come on and the high beam does not come on. With the key in the on position and the kill switch off, the low beam does not come on but the high beam works. This is what I recall happening on mine, but I have to check again. I don't think there is any connection between the gear position and the headlight operation, but I could be wrong. Mike. |

On mine, both the low & high beams work with the key on position, regardless the kill switch is OFF or ON, or whether the gear is in neutral or first. (Message edited by dcmortalcoil on October 18, 2004) |

I don't think the Firebolt lights are wired the same as the Lightnings. mike. |

From the 2003 XB9R Service Manual, Section 7.3: Table 7-9.Indicator Markers

My bike is XB9S, with the front conversion to R. I just wired the lights based on what my voltmeter indicated. XB9S manual does state that the low can be activated with the ignition on position. Hence, my low beam is on at all times when the ignition is on. |

On the question of headlights, which side should the low beam be at? The headlight bracket has a marker that indicates the low beam being on the right side, but the manual states that it's on the left side. I'm referring to the right side as the side with the belt drive. |

Right, on a stock XB9R bike, the low can be activated "with the ignition on position" ONLY IF the Run/Kill switch is ON as well, otherwise it won't come on (see table above). The XB9S is not the same and Midknyte's post was about his '03 XB9R. On the 2003 XB9R, the low beam is on the side with the belt drive (right side). Not sure about the XB9S. Mike. I was talking about my other right side! Thanks for catching that mistake. Correction: Low Beam Headlight is located on Left Side of Vehicle. Mike. |

interesting. on the R bikes thew low beam stays on whenever the engine is running, on the S bikes the low beam is only on when the hi beam is off. i intend to modify mine so that the low beam stays on whenever the engine is running, that way i can run both low and high beams simultaneously. |

FP you can simply roll the switch to the middle position to get both lights to stay on. It can be a bit fiddly to set but once its there even your roads shoudln't knock it out of place...a wayward thumb will but thats a rider issue |

LOL...no, you were right. On MINE th left side is the low beam. I reversed them only a couple months after getting the bike. If they started shipping them with the low beam on the left, it's news to me! |

Dude, I am so confused. That's what I get for assuming the Service Manual is right. The manual says low beam left side. Looking at the bike now, I was right the first time. Mike. |
